Ok, I'm making a Faerunian character for the first time and I want it to be a rogue 3 air genasi with improved levitation (from races of faerun).

The weird thing is that my player's handbook says that levitation lasts 1 min./caster level and RoF says it lasts 10 min./level. I supposedly should listen to the PHB here but I think that this is simply happening because someone changed levitate's functionality for 3.5.

Is this the case?? did the original allowed the caster to levitate other people? Could I levitate other people five times with the feat? how should I work this out? (I mean, they would be 500lb of levitate power). How would you people work this out?

Use the most recent source. Or otherwise, ask your DM and have him make a decision on which source is official for your game.

Yeah, sure, but I'm actually curious about what each of you would tell me if you were my DM.

ok, people, it's not that hard a question is it?

Both books came out in 2003 (the revised 3.5 PHB), so that doesn't help much. I can't find in RoF where it gives duration for levitation, so that might help.

All things considered, since both came out around the same time, I would go with whatever it says in RoF - Setting specific books trump core in this case.

Largely it is based off of how your DM wants it to run. With my game group I have made rulings on some various durations we thought should be longer, shorter or more in line with the 3.0 rules. Then incorporated them as house rules.

My best suggestion is go to your DM, plead your case as to why you think it should be one duration over another and come up with a workable solution. Hope that helps a bit ;)
