I am starting a group in my town and have agreed to be the DM but they have all stopped working on their characters and want me to finish them for them. Whats the best way to tell them to hurry up so we can get started?

"Dudes, come on, we can't start until you've got your characters ready."

That's always worked for me.

"No experience until I have a background and a copy of your character sheet."

That might work, too.

"I'll let you start with magic items and money if you get your characters done."

Sets an ugly precedent, but this usually works.

-I've used this one, paraphrased slightly, and it works. I can vouch for it.
