Ok we've had debates on who would win between Elminster and Drizzt, Elminster and Raistlin, Drizzt and Zaknafein, and so on so forth. Well here is a new one.

Who would win in a battle between a commoner of Waterdeep and a commoner of Shadowdale???

I thought I read some were that the average Dalelander was a 2nd level fighter. just due o the fact that they have to hunt more, defend there farms, etc....

While the average "deeper"(other than the bar fighting) would only be a 0 lvl.

So I my opinion a dalelander would whomp him silly.

I'm not trying to be offensive, but this is close to a stupid question, the Dalelander who pretty much lives in the frontier where they have the greatest non-elven bowmen and a large amount of their citizens trained in the militia would knock a "deeper" freaking senseless. The average "deeper" lives with the City Watch and the Guard doing all of the military training and bar brawling, the "deeper" wouldn't stand a chance at all.

I'm not terribly convinced this is such a serious question...

But I'll go with the general consensus: By virtue of the rougher lifestyle in the Dales, a Dalesman would prolly be able to drop a Waterdhavian pretty readily.

Here's one:

An average Cormyran War Wizard vs. an average Halruuan Wizard.

The Halruaan. Not only does he likely have access to different magic, but in Halruaa, magic is a huge part of life. In Halruaa, even kids learn magic!

Despite the strength of the War Wizards, magic is not as much a part of Cormyrean day-to-day life.

Exactly. The average Halruaan wizard is likely to be some merchant who learned a bit of wizardry for convenience or something, while a Cormyrean War Wizard is going to be well-trained in combat. The Cormyrean would win.

A bit of wizardry? Magic and mages are the most important things in Halruaa! Magic is common down there because everyone practices it to some form or other.

And where do you get the average wizard being a merchant with a bit of magic? How does that even qualify as being a wizard?

I think what he means is that in terms of "average", Halruua being so full of magic (that nation being the closest thing to a New Netheril and all) that even merchants and noble sons/daughters are average wizards. Yet the Cormyr War Wizards are specifically trained for combat and as such would probably win.
This was a tough one, which is why I threw it out there. On the one hand you're right, Halruua has so much new and powerful magic at their disposal and their schools probably blow most other nations away, yet don't discout the abilities of a mage specifically trained to fight.

You could say the same thing about the Waterdeep Prestige Class mage (can't think of their name) taking on a Thayan or Rasheman witch. That Waterdeep mage has a spell pool to draw from and is also trained to fight, but those Thayans and Rasheman witches are used to fighting and have some powerful magics as well.

God I love these discussions.

Who would win:

An elephant in musth or a puking bard?

I'm serious. This has actually happened.

Thank you.

A Halruaan commoner would blow away a Cormyrean commoner because of the magic. This is a commoner vs commoner thread so the War Wizards don't count :P

That one's easy.

The Cormyrian War Wizard of course! Magic might be more prolific in the life of an average Halruuan, let alone Halruuan wizard, but a Cormyrian War Wizard is at least an 8th level spellcaster (wizard 7/war wizard of Cormyr 1 - Magic of Faerun pg. 40)! :D

As for the question of the Dalelander vs. the Waterdhavian... the Dalelander would beat 'dhavian to a bloody pulp, no problem.

The premise of this thread assumes equivalent levels. So it goes back in favor of the Halruaan.

actually if the premise holds I would ahve to agree with the Cormyrian war wizard - both are say level 10 total in some combi ation of classes and prestige classes so tehy are basically even there. the Halruaan is probably more famliar with magic in general but is also probably younger and and more likely to lose his cool or panic while the war mage is older, and trained not to lose his cool and how to get the most out his spells in combat. that is a really telling combo. now a Halruaan war mage vs a cormyrian war mage? now I'll take the Halruaan.

Look at it this way: A war wizard of 10 level is a really powerful person where he comes from. Few can match his magic skills, and facing a Halruaan he might be up against something he has never seen before.

The Halruaan on the other hand, knows all and everything about magic. In his land, he has fought all kind of wizards, and knows about all kinds of wizards spells that will be used against him. He might have seen wizard battles at mage fairs since he was a child. He went to wizard college, and trained there with the best wizards till he was ready. The War Wizard on the other hand, might have been trained by one wizard (and who knows how good he was), and then joined the War Wizards.

While the War Wizard would perhaps start of with a Fireball, the Halruaan would know that spell from the first move of the War Wizards finger, and counter it easy, then Halruaan would have a comeback with a strange unknown spell, that the war wizard may never have encounterd before, and would not know how to stop.

It would also not suprise me if a Halruaan was far better equiped with magic items then the War Wizard.

The Cormyrian War Wizard wins every day.

If they both have the same levels, the average Halruuan Wizards has spent his life on research and study. He does not possess the same instinctive combat mind that th Cormyrian War Wizard does. He has not had as much experience with the effects of battle spells in a variety of settings and scenarios. He might have a broader knowledge of magic, but he won't be acclimated to a battle to the death.

Surface Elf Bladesinger vs. Drow Warrior

One in nine halruaans have at least 1 level as a Wizard.

Bladesinger get my vote, those guys just wup butt with their weapon abilities and spell throwing so any old drow warrior would be hard pressed to take them on. Yet you can't discount the drow's cunning. But the Bladesinger gets my vote.

Since the Bladesinger needs to mix 2 classes, and mix feats, I would put all my gold on the Drow Fighter. Even more so if you take pure 10 level Bladesinger VS 10 Level Drow Fighter, since the drow has all the fancy abilites.
Artemis22

01-12-04, 04:09 PM
I would fancy the Drow ...though the bladesinger has his own tricks and abillities, Drow warriors have their own...I guess it would depend on the terrain they fight on ...but i stick with the Drow. :smirk:

you have to remember though that a drows ecl is 2 meaning he would be several clas lvls behind the bladesinger if not behind exp wise im sorry but the bladesinger would kick butt anyday (stoneskine anyone)
