I just started playing D&D about seven months ago and got the v3.5 core rulebooks.

I was thinking about getting the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, since I've been reading the FR books about Drizzt Do'Urden. But then I found out that some of the FR rulebooks are in v3! And that some are v3.5 (they changed the edition part way thorught)!

So, is this right? Are some of the books in v3 & others in v3.5? If so, which books are in v3 & which are in v3.5? Also, does anyone know if they plan on updating the books to v3.5? If not, is v3 that much different form v3.5? If it's not that much different, could I still use FR even thought I ues v3.5? Can I have a few examples of the differences?

Thanks a lot for whoever takes the time to read this, and even more to those who answer!

Hey, it's worse than you think - some FR products are in 1st Edition, and a probable majority are in 2nd Edition! The setting has been around since 1987, after all...

But before that scares you off completely, you can get along just fine with the 3e and 3.5e books. And there isn't too terribly much difference between the two, so, for the most part, books that were in 3e can be used with very little (or no) modification in 3.5e. You can get the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book and use it with virtually no problem in 3.5e, even though it is in 3e. The only real changes would be for actual stats for NPCs and prestige classes. And in many cases, the 3e stuff (in the FRCS and elswhere) has been updated to 3.5, mostly in The Player's Guide to Faerun.

Even stuff from earlier editions translate over pretty easily as well. After all, a 4th-level fighter is still pretty much a 4th-level fighter regardless of edition...

The Player's Guide to Faerun, and the FRCS are just about all you will need to start. With those two books you will have the fluff and crunch thats needed. Also the other source books are great, try to buy what you will use first do not swamp yourself I did that it was a bad choice to make.
Some other good books are: Unapprochable East, Lost empires of Faerun, Underdark, Silver Marches, and magic of Faerun. Those are great areas to play in also, they are a good starter set.
If I did not help you I am sorry.

before you buy anything besides the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and the Player's Guide to Faerun, make sure you check the products page to make sure books you buy are 3.5 (I bought Magic of Faerun a few months back before I realized it was 3.0, and not all the spells have been updated {at least not for free... now some are online, some are in the Spell Compendium})
