| Charles Phipps02-15-08, 02:01 PM | I'm interested in starting up an outright Baronial War in the Forgotten Realms of feuding kingdoms and kingship ambitions. My players have decided High Fantasy has gotten a bit dull but aren't willing to give up their hard one EXP. Ergo, they want me to send some poor nation to the chopping block Post-Spellplague. The model I'm going to use should be obvious from the title with even analogues. So, where should I stick it? |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin02-15-08, 02:50 PM | Border Kingdoms, hands down. |
| Uzzy02-15-08, 04:56 PM | You'd need to change things around a bit, but why not Cormyr? Plenty of scheming noble houses there who will all be willing and able to make a grab for the throne if the King dies in an accident hunting boars. ;) Further, not only do you have all the scheming houses, but you have the ever present threat of the Shades coming in and taking over. Instead of, you know, winter. Now I'm picturing House Cormaeril as House Lannister. Great. |
| Old Sage02-15-08, 07:33 PM | Rino beat me to it! :P |
| Charles Phipps02-15-08, 07:41 PM | House Cormaeril WASN'T House Lannister? Please, Azoun and Robert were like brothers! |
| XHereticX02-15-08, 08:56 PM | House Cormaeril WASN'T House Lannister? Please, Azoun and Robert were like brothers! Except Azoun wasen't a decadent drunk in the last years of his rule, and Azoun certainly was no usurper!!! Greyhawk would be a far better setting if you want this kind of feudal intrigue. But like Rino and Sage have mentioned, The Border Kingdoms are a good place to do it, and Damara has promise as well. |
| Charles Phipps02-15-08, 09:05 PM | Eh, if I was going to buy a new setting, I'd buy the Song of Fire and Ice RPG. |
| XHereticX02-15-08, 09:05 PM | Eh, if I was going to buy a new setting, I'd buy the Song of Fire and Ice RPG. There's one??? |
| Charles Phipps02-15-08, 09:14 PM | There's one??? Yep. http://www.swordsorcery.com/index.php?articleid=229 I'm debating whether to get this expensive but beautiful version or the one coming out later this year. |
| Old Sage02-15-08, 09:18 PM | Indeed. Guardians of Order began publishing the RPG with "A Game of Thrones" (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=2741&it=1&filters=0_0_0&free=4) campaign setting. However, GoO folded shortly thereafter and Martin eventually had to recover the rights to his IP. Back in April '07, Green Ronin Publishing announced (http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/11999.html) they would begin publishing an RPG for "A Song of Fire and Ice" -- it's set for release later this year. |
| Uzzy02-15-08, 09:27 PM | If you stick it in Cormyr, then you can have the added bonus of Alusair pulling a Daenerys. The expensive one is very good. I've got a copy. But it might be best to wait around for the new one before splashing out serious cash, just to see what it's like and how well supported it will be. |
| GothicDan02-15-08, 11:47 PM | I own the Song of Ice and Fire RPG. It's excellent. They really improved a lot of things from the core D20 system, and I really like how they treat magic in some ways - requiring Feats, which is how I would do it if I made a world. As to where to do it, there's obviously no place that would be a good analogue. However, if you're just going for the aristocratic/royal intrigue feel, you need intrigue and monarchy, and the only really good place for that is Cormyr. I don't think the Border Kingdoms would really have the right history/scope in terms of size, past wars, conflicts, established Houses, etc. to come off right for Westeros. |
| Markustay02-15-08, 11:54 PM | The Blade Kingdoms would also work. http://fc01.deviantart.com/fs30/f/2008/046/3/1/Blade_Kingdoms_by_Markustay.jpg Diamond-shaped cities are independent city-states, for people unfamiliar with my map icons. |
