i and my friends have a problem: how does work this skill about the humanoid?

it's sufficent to have some rank and it works everywhere or it works only in the region that you know i.e. if i have Knowledge (thay) can i use it in the sword coast to know something about a humanoid monster?

thanks for any help

From what I understand, Knowledge: Local is mostly just a localized knowledge skill about a particular region and it's history and customs. Like.. if you have Knowledge (Local): Waterdeep, you would know about its customs, its history, about the Lords (not who they are), and the watch and what not. You would know some about the Gray Hands and how they are like the elite police. And all that fun stuff. I may be wrong, but I have always seen it as a specialized knowledge of a region and it's people.

what you said it's right. in fact we don't have any problem about use this skill to check ths PC's kniwledge about customs or legends of a region...but what about use it to know something a humanoid monster like goblins? are goblins (and other humanoid monsters) the same in thay as in sword coast or a PC have to take ranks in each "local" skill?

Hmm.. that's an interesting question. I suppose it would depend on the customs. One who knows about goblins in Thay, would probably know a good deal about goblins in general, their tendencies, their appearance and what not. And since most goblins throughout the realsm are more or less the same, they would probably still know a good deal about those on the Sword Coast. What they wouldn't know is which areas are heavily infested with goblins, unless those areas are similar to the areas in Thay that they know of. They also wouldn't know the current trends of the goblins, like where they are more active and if they have a leader. But they would still know about the general aspects of goblins, such as, they are evil, they are short, they are not too be trusted. And even if they came across goblins in another area that were not like this, they would assume they were the same as the goblins back home.

The Knowladge Local 'humanoid' part would only work for the humanoids of that region. This is true of all parts of Knowladge Local, of course. If you have Knowladge Local(Thay) you know the laws of Thay, not all the laws of Toril.

Though, like most Knowladge skills, there is plenty of room for information. A good part of humanoid knowladge, say about a third, would be general enough to apply worldwide. Knowladge Local(Cromyr) would let you know about goblins, and with a high check you could know that Maglubiyet is the head goblin god, and that is true worldwide. The same is true that 'goblins ride big wolfs called worgs', and that's true for most goblins, though not all of them. Though the Goblins that live along the Dustwall mountains and thoes that livein Chult ride diffrent creatures.
