Hello Everybody!

I know it's been like years since I've posted on these forums, used to be Renvale999, had to change the name thanks to Gleemax...but I digress.

So, I've had an idea in my head and I want to run it by everyone on these boards and get your input as it will be a collective effort I think.

I want to write an module/adventure path that takes place in Forgotten Realms, that goes from level 1 to 40+. In this module, I want the PC's to literally take on the gods(their avatars of course) in an epic battle that won't be canon per say but should be fun nonetheless.

I want to accomplish this by posting the Chapter's Names, giving what little ideas I have for them, fleshing them out with you guys, then putting them onto paper. I will take care of the maps and all that and I know there are some great minds on these boards that will no doubtly come up with far better things than I ever could.

The overall story arc is Bane decides to resurrect Bhaal and Myrkul(I know alot of people have run this kind of game so I'm hoping to draw from their ideas) to challenge Cyric and Kelemvor, and in the process take the portfolio of Magic from Mystra. Now, the good gods will of course oppose this but I also want Shar to "help" the PC's in subtle ways in order to thwart Bane as she wants the Weave for herself or see it destroyed.

First and foremost I'm hoping for some constructive criticism on the overall idea then begin posting chapters and see what we can come up.

Any and all input(as long as it's not mean lol) is welcome.

P.S. Hi Markus, Lord Karsus, Merrickale, I missed you guys lol

Some follow up questions.
What portfolios you have in mind for a resurrected Bhaal and Myrkul?
How would you convince Myrkul to came back since some lore states that he is content with his current situation within The Crown of Horns?

Also, you are aware that Mystra is DEAD as of 1385 DR, and there is NO Weave anymore, right?

Cyric already killed her. :(

That sounds great for a work in The Realms Vault (www.forgottenrealmsvault.com)

If you want to start with it I can give you your own board section (just look at the Elves of Faerūn section)

Okay, to answer some questions.

First off, Lord Karsus, I plan on having the campaign seem somewhat mundane at first. Although it will have an affect on the later Chapters, Chapter 1 will seem like a normal adventure. As far as getting the PC's involved, I can put several plot hook suggestions, whether it be greed, power, or just doing the right thing. I want to keep the campaign so that it can be done by either good or evil.

Second: As far as portfolios goes, I haven't gotten that far yet, like I said I'm just fleshing out ideas at this point. As far as Myrkul coming back, I figure the promise of greater Godhood and maybe a percieved slight by Kelemvor against Myrkul would be enough for him to want to reclaim his power. I could maybe figure into the campaign the PC's being unwitting participants in the plot to make Myrkul think Kelevmor has wronged him.

Post more later, gotta get back to work lol.

I know it's not canon, but I generally only stay with canon if it suits my purpose. I was thinking though that maybe doing the whole "different timelines" type game, or atleast give the PC's insight into the fact that there are several different "versions" of Faerun. Maybe the get a glimpse into the canon Faerun and realize that although the circumstances are different, they still have to stop the same thing from happening in their timeline.

Now, before all the physics majors pull apart any time travel stuff, this would only be like one scene in the campaign and not an over-arching plotline, so I can keep things simple lol.

I was thinking of the whole portfolio thing and I think that Myrkul and Bhaal would go after Death and Murder respectively, which would mean that the PC's may get help from the Church of Kelemvor and maybe even the Church of Cyric(but this could just turn bloody lol). I just like the PC's getting help from evil sources, if they're evil, it give them possible allies. If they are good, it is likely to ruffle their feathers and make for some good role-playing opportunities.

I would imagine parts of the adventure path then would involve retrieving the crown of horns as well as gathering all te bhaalspawn as these are the tangible links to the power of the dead gods.

Perhaps the PC's must oppose priests of Bane who are seeking to collect these items.

I think it may also be a very interesting idea would be for Bane to try to reinvent the Karsus Avatar spell in order to steal the power of Mystra temporarily weakening her, then killing her and hopefully subsuming her portfolio as he would currently be holding her divine power.

As far as making it an extended campaign I think it could work, it would certainly be interesting for any players who are fans of the dead three. It could work for an evil party opposing Bane or even followers of Bane or the dead two to pursue.

Except that magic at the level of Karsus Avatar can't be cast in the Realms. If any god atempts to do that Mystra can stop the spell from being cast with her 20 counterspell actions, or SLAs, or a request to AO.

Sure she can stp it in the Realms. What if Bane is researching it and casts it somewhere else opening up a conduit to Mystra's plane in the process.

That is one explanation for how it can be done.

Also you can ignore that aspect of canon or you can say that Bane being a god is not limited to the same spellcasting limitation as mortals. It could even be reworked as an Epic Spell.

Or she could simpply allow him to waste resources and time obtaining the components and shut him down at the end as part of the plot.

I am thinking more of Bane directly facing Mystra with Myrkul and Bhaal at his side once again. I know she can shut down Magic but I'm thinking maybe an artifact of somekind that would allow him to be immune to that affect. I am thinking that the end battle would be the PC's facing off against avatars of Bane, Myrkul and Bhaal moving against Mystra.

Maybe a Shadow Weave artifact? Hence why Shar is seeking to stop him since he's stole the artifact before the campaign ever begins.

She can't counter-spell a spell casted in a plane other than the one she's currently at and even then she can counter-spell in a range of 18 miles (provided that she can properly identify the spell). And about requesting Ao to stop the spell... That's Mystra's job, to prevent such things from happening, she has the Deny Weave Salient Divine Ability which she is allowed to use in such cases.

That's why I also mentioned SLAs. That's the same thing she did to Cyric during the 4th ToT book when he tried to cast a forbidden spell and AO approved Mystra's actions.

SLAs = Spell-Like Abilities

IMHO the idea have potential but requires a lot of work to be done right. You (or we since you open this thread to gather ideas and suggestions) have to establish a timeline of events and decide what of what is happening you will use and consider canon for your campaign, everything depends on that.

I have a few ideas, I will share and maybe something can be useful.

The scenario, Mystra is dead, Cyric imprisonment, no more Weave, Faerun in chaos 'cuz of The Spellplague. Bane is disgusted and want to bring back order, his order, become the supreme lord so he attempts to bring the dark three again, so he sent Mask to retrieve The Crown of Horns.

Shar on the other hand is pleased with what is happening, maybe she didn't knew that all this will happen with the dead of Mystra and the destruction of the Weave, so she intent to capitalize the situation but her personal assassin is gone for the time being, she need a replacement and her plans for Hoar didn't came to fruition so why not replace him too? entry Bhaal, the late Lord of Murder fit perfectly so she attempts to bring him back by completing The Bhaalspawn story arc and that way gaining someone to do her dirty job, a god slayer amongst other jobs.

That can result in an alliance, at least temporarily, between Bane and Shar. The plan of Bane involve Gargauth, with him, Bane have in mind to take control over by brute force or by politics, and now he have his personal Devil's Advocate to do so, this is a reflection of how The Zentharim are currently working, becoming a Black Network, a mafia if you like.

That's some of the basic ideas I have in mind for a 'Michael "Godfather" Corleone' type of Bane, The Overlord BANE.

I'm not keen on the idea of Bane, the Ultimate Tyrant (Law), being allied with Shar, who is the embodiment of Entropy (Chaos).

However, I do like that the 12th level spell must be cast from an alternate plane as DMD suggested.

Perhaps part of the plan is to travel to the Outer Planes and steal/find/aquire a Greater Artifact capable of creating a Planar Breach, thus allowing someone to tear a hole in reality, and cast spells through it. This would be a very good surprise tactic against a god that thinks it's safe.

Figure this particular part of the Adventure Path would have to be among the higher-level scenarios - maybe the PCs even need to steal the artifact from a god, before Bane is able to make a deal for it.

Maybe Asmodeus has it.

Or the Lady of Pain. :lop:

You really need to figure out the over-all story arc first - how many seperate adventures are we looking at for this thing?

Shar embodies nothingness not entropy. In any case, Bane could ally with Shar if he believes that he can outsmart/outmuscle her eventually when he no longer requires her aid.
Derenger999

02-08-08, 07:28 PM
Okay, ALOT of good suggestions and questions to answer.

First, I believe Bane could ally with Shar, for the fact that Bane considers himself above all other dieties(sp?). Now, Shar intends to destroy the weave and not let Bane take control of it. Now, Cyric will be very interested to stop all this since it threatens one of his portfolios(murder) and it's one of his arch enemies.

Now, what I think Bane will do is the whole rip a tear in reality with a Greater Artifact(maybe from the Far Realm) then attack Mystra with Bhaal and Myrkul as his side(also have them there to help if any other dieties attack him). Shar plans to "ally" with Bane until the time comes to attack Mystra then she will intervene and attempt to destory the Weave all together. Cyric will seek to stop the whole thing and will even instruct his clergy to ally with other good dieties(with plans to slay as many as they can when they are of no need). I see mainly Mystra and Kelevmor looking to stop the whole thing.

As far as how many adventures go, I have no idea there Markus, as many as it takes to tell the story I guess.

-Well, depending where you start things, you can easily have the Zhentarim involved. From there, include a Banite priest, somehow link him/her to the plotline at hand, and now the PCs have the hook in their mouth, and are ready to bit. For the in-between, perhaps you can include adventures that are historically tied, or have something to do with the various religions that will be mentioned later, as a way to "meet" some of the potential players for later.
MarkusTay63

02-09-08, 02:21 AM
Yeah - perhaps start off in a lowbie area like the Dales with the usual Zhent-interaction, which starts the ball rolling.

Eventually, maybe half-way through, have them go into Anauroch to find a long-lost Netherese portal to take them to the place the artifact is kept in - then you could have a fight with some Shades, Phaerimm, or even some Sarrukh minions like the Asabi.

At some point, there should also be a switch-back. Basically, the heroes foil the bad guys plans, but unbeknownst to them, the villains had a back-up plan. Maybe have the heroes get to the Planar Breach Artifact first, and take it out of action. they will think they have won, but then they find out that was just one of the avenues the evil ones were persuing.

You can even do that more then once, but unless its handled with real finesse, more then one switch-back per story-arc makes the PCs feel like they aren't accomplishing anything.

Just one question ... 3,5E?
Lord Karsus

02-09-08, 07:59 AM
-Ah, good point. If you aren't going to sticking very close to the WotC canon, what edition you are going to play isn't going to matter very much. But, mechanically, things are going to be changed. Most notably, I think, is that characters will be normally progressing from Level 1 to Level 30, and that there will be Level 30 spells, and so on.

Since 3e is STILL the current official set of rules for D&D, I would use those.

Then, depending on how far this goes and how well received it is, it can be converted to 4e.

So, I suppose the first part of this story arc will involve bringing back Myrkul - I would suggest plunking down the Crown of Horns on some unwitting female head (just for a twist), and have him take her over and 'burn away' her mortal flesh, leaving the skeltal form of Myrkul .

I suppose the female should be very powerful in her own right - perhaps a Chosen - but you'd have to decide if she is a new NPC, or an established one.

The NEW Myrkul -

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs25/i/2008/031/0/7/she_death_by_MagusTheLofty.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/b7/DeathMarvel1.JPG/252px-DeathMarvel1.JPG They really need to add some 're-size' to their BB code on this forum.

Then Bane and her could go on to find and restore the pieces of Bhaal as part two of the series, with part three being the final confrontation.

I think each part should be composed of at least 3-5 individual adventures, just to get those levels up.
Derenger999

02-10-08, 12:41 AM
Agreed Markus.

Maybe do like Level 1-4 against the Zhents, and the PC's being unwittingly drawn into the plot as agents of Bane, even though they seem to be working against him. I think that would be a good place to start.

BTW, thanks EVERYONE for you input, you guys are the reason this is gonna work.

I've been printing this thread as we go so I have the ideas on paper.

So, for the first chapter, I think Karsus was right in making it against the Zhents, possibly in the dalelands, but in the backround, the PC's actually start working for them. I don't think Bane would mind sacrificing his own people for his own ends. It will give anyone else the impression (Harpers perhaps) that the PC's are going against Banites, when in fact they are working for the Banites against other factions of Zhentarim(possibly rogue Cyric factions).

So, for the first chapter.

Chapter One: Put your two Zhents in.

The PC's are drawn into the adventure working for a mysterious figure who begins sending them on what appear to be normal adventures against Zhentarim factions and monsters. What they don't know is that the mysterious figure is actually a high ranking Banite Cleric exploiting the PC's. Now, for evil groups, he can reveal who he is, but never really tell the PC's what the overall plan is.

Any and all input is welcome...where in the Dalelands it should start...rough outline of what missions they should go on. Hell, if someone is bored and wants to stat up a high ranking Banite cleric with a backround, that would be good as well. As well any enemies the PC's might face, as well as changes that may need to be made for evil or neutral groups.

I've kinda of adopted this whole thread as our adventure, maybe how we want our Realms to turn out, as opposed to 4E canon, but that's just me and please don't de-rail the thread on that note lol.
MarkusTay63

02-10-08, 01:05 AM
Sounds good so far.

All of the chapters should should be broken up into three parts (fantasy LOVES trilogies) -

Part I: The Return of Myrkul
.Chapter 1 - Put your two Zhents in
.Chapter 2 - Drow, and How!

Part II: The search for Bhaal

Partt III: The Death of Mystra

I would say that whatever the Banites are trying to get in the Dales, have some of the Cormanthor Drow get it first (cliffhanger of part 1). Then the DM has the option of having the party work for the Zhents (if they were already doing so), or try to prevent them by getting whatever 'it' is from the Drow first. At this early stage in the game, I would just say 'it' was a map... for chapter 3.
Lord Karsus

02-10-08, 01:29 AM
-Perhaps you can have that high ranking Banite NPC who is secretly funding the PCs a Banelich. It's survived this long, and believes that, for whatever reason, Bane can only 'prevail' if his two lieutenants, Bhaal and Myrkul are fighting at his side.
Derenger999

02-10-08, 08:21 AM
For those who asked, this is gonna be 3.5, cause my group has another DM already designated for 4E, but we've already agreed that we'll still play 3.5 regardless.

I like your input Markus, I'm pretty sure I'll keep the names of the parts and I changed the first chapter to your name for it, that was good.

Karsus, where is the template for the Banelich located at, I spent an hour pouring through my books this morning and couldn't find it.

If you wanted to stat up the NPC Karsus, I wouldn't be opposed :)

As well, I like what your ideas for Part I Markus, so I was thinking, any chance you wanna take a stab at some of the missions? Or anyone for that matter. I think I've got mission one.

Mission 1: Into the burial grounds.

The PC's are sent by Banelich guy into an old set of caverns/catacombs to retrieve a key that will open a lock on a book that the Banelich has(magical lock, cannot be open except by the key). The book will give the location of a map to an artifact that will enable the Banelich to ressurect Myrkul. The cormanther drow have gotten wind of this and will send some of their troops to intercept the PC's, as they want the artifact for themselves(I'm at a loss for the reason why).

Again, any and all input is welcome.

Think OUTSIDE the box -

Perhaps Wizardly magic is limited to the ninth level, but it takes RAW natural talent to produce spells ABOVE that...

That would make Karsus the ULTIMATE Sorceror. ;)

I'd stat him at something like Wiz 21, Sorc 10, UltMag 10

That would basically give him epic magic, the equivalent of 51 levels of casting ability, extra firepower, and some neat tricks that go with the Magus, like exchanging Wizard Slots for spontaneous ones.

With all of that going for him, he was already practically a demi-power before mugging Mystra. :P

Without knowing how that Adventure Path will work, I would oppose the idea to write "Realmslore" (even if it is essentially only fan-fic) which is tied to some certain events. I had a glance at Shadowdale and, given my field of interest, found quite a bit of additional information and lore on the drow there, the drow after the WotSQ and CotSQ. And guess what, this lore goes essentially out of the window at the end of the chapter and book, as it is assumed that the PC do away with all the drow there - in-setting. You bring some interesting lore into the world, but when tying it too close to the adventure and its path, the lore has only half of the value for the setting as such, as it is essentially "dead lore" by the end of the book.

And there is so much lore and empty spaces in history out there which can be used here.

Personally I would work some Jergal into your story. You are dealing with Bane, Bhaal, Myrkul, Kelemvor, Cyric, Shar, and Mystra already, this seems like the perfect time (or event) for Jergal to bust out some hidden plot. Personally, I would like to see some machinations involving Jergal playing multiple sides against each other. I realize the likelihood of you taking this as far as I would (or even liking the idea) is small.

-To take everything a step further, and semi-include that Age of Wyrms thing, where Jergal was like the ultimate evil, perhaps Jergal intended to use Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul very much like Talos intended to use Velsharron- like living batteries to syphon power from. Perhaps, instead of a Banelich playing everyone, it's a high ranking (Chosen, even?) of Jergal, seeking to bring Bhaal and Myrkul back, so that Jerga can reabsorb all of them.

-Sounds cool.

I had a glance at Shadowdale and, given my field of interest, found quite a bit of additional information and lore on the drow there, the drow after the WotSQ and CotSQ. And guess what, this lore goes essentially out of the window at the end of the chapter and book, as it is assumed that the PC do away with all the drow there - in-setting.I'm not quite understanding you here - do you meant he adventure invalidating something in the series, the series invalidated the modules, or interesting stuff was made up for the modules, but then 'destroyed' by the end of them?

I would be interested in coming up with the outline of the second part (with maps!), but I don't think I'd have the time to flesh it out with NPCs, treasure, magic, etc... but I could lay out the whole thing in a chronological outline.

Do the characters get the key at the end of part 1? If so, then at least one (hidden) Drow must be present when the book is read, or at least when the instructions are given to the PCs as to where to find the map. If we wind-up part two in the mines of Tethyamer, that will put the PCs on the edge of the Anauroch, and the Drow effectively out of the picture... for now.

If the Vhaerun-worshipping Drow are involved, the priest may have caught wind of the Banite plot, and want HIS god to get a piece of the action. That way, you may bring the Drow back one last time late in the adventure-arc, and perhaps involve Vhaerun himmself at some point. You can even flip this, and tie it to canon lore, and have Lolth herself step in before her son gets his hands on the artifact. That would be a very interesting way to end one part, with Vhaerun about to succeed and Lolth SAVING THE DAY! :dancin:

Lolth, of course, will not want to get further involved, because it doesn't involve the Seldarine and she could care less about Shar or Cyric's plans.

Part I:
.chapter 3: Just Deserts - into Anauroch.

Chapter three, or if there will be a chapter four, should end grandly, with lots of players and a couple of cliff-hangers, somewhere in Anauroch. I don't know where the action of the super-module of that name takes place, but wherever it is, your adventure should be in a whiole 'nother locale; Anaouroch is HUGE, so there are quite a few areas where you can have fun, and there's even a Zhent town down in the south-west corner.

The Banelich could be Stallac Benandi from Ruins of Zhentil Keep. He already has a background and using an NPC with some Realmslore is always fun.

He has a temple underneath Zhentil Keep that perhaps the PC's can invade at some point in the adventure.

It would make sense that he would be involved in that he held out against Cyric for so long beneath Zhentil Keep waiting for Bane to come back. It would also make sense that it would be him if not Fzoul who Bane would entrust with accomplishing his goals. Fzoul is no doubt tracked by Harper agents while Stallac moves about unseen and has for centuries. :)

I believe I statted him for 3.5 about 2 years ago I can dig him up and post him if you like.

Greetings.

I love the idea. I love so much, and I want to weave it into my current adventure:

The PCs are red wizards, traveling with a clan-like group of red wizards in the name of Szass Tam (necromancery), and Yaphyll (divination). They are sent to the Anuaroch (sp?) to thwart the plans of the shades--to steal the netherese artifacts that the shades have been collecting over recent years.

All is going according to plan until they realize that one of their Thayan Knights is infact a succubus (lover and minion of Gargauth). They are then teleported to Gargauth's current lair in the Underdark (banished from the Abyss).

And...thats where I am. I really like the idea, and I think my adventure has potential ties to this plot like deal you guys (and gals) are weaving. But lets not forget those red wizards! Do you honestly think they would stand by this and watch this go on without sticking their fingers in the pies as well? Not only do they worship most of the foul deities, but they are often guarded by clerics. And lets not forget Szass Tam! whoa, I mean he has tried countless times to reach divinity---envying Velsharoon greatly. So he might want to do something here. We also have the drow who are natural shadow weave users. And lets not forget the Cult of the Dragon who might want to gain an upper hand in their plots by helping the deceased gods. Manshoon (thank you very much!) will also have something to say about this, as Fzoul Chembryll will no doubt back Bane.

Just ideas. Nothing more.

Yup, lots of good ideas floating around here, and the more that contribute, the better (and more detailed) this thing can become. :D

I underlined the correct answer! :)Thank you for the clarification...

and I agree. ;)

It's such a waste when they create something interesting, and then take it back away from us before we can really do anything with it (the Novels are the WORST offender of this, eating away the plothooks provided by the FRCS and other sources).

What about Velsharoon (spelling)? I mean he is slowly crawling from under the shadows---what a perfect time to strike! Whether it is to attack Myrkul when he is weak, to gain his newly restored portfolio, or to create a pact and alliance with Bane. He has potential whether as a minor character or as a hidden villian (or ally perhaps). He might have ties to the Banelich? Who knows?

Hey, guys! I would like to do some watercolor paintings of some of the Main NPC's and villians? So, uhh, as of now, I know we have that lady who has the crown of thorns-horns, whatever it is. So I will start on her. I will, every once a week or so scan a picture onto the computer so you guys can do whatever with it. Uhh...I was thinking...could that lady be a drow? Just a thought. I dont really care, but i need an okay soon- and a verification on race. Thanks,

Well, yes. Many of the NPCs described in the FRCS have been rapidly killed off in the recent novel series, though that was to be expected. In a way, they started the cleansing of the Realms early here, paving the way for FR 4E and new heroes and anti-heroes.
