Warning: will likely contain spoilers.

I have been DMing this mod for a while now, and (after people dying, changes of players, etc.) we have a 3 person evil party: a half-troll frenzied berserker, shade rogue (though not really connected with the shades in general, he has amnesia), and a sorceror lich.

The party recently arrived in the city. They have not found access to the castle, have not discovered the Hidden, but they just completely slaughtered Kurgoth. Now, being evil, they are planning on approaching the castle and trying to ally themselves with the Kiaransaleen. They intend to just send the lich (no real fear of death) up to the door to try to parley. Anyone have suggestions as to how the Kiaransaleen would handle this? In the end I know that there would be some type of betrayal (almost necessarily in order to get the adverture on the track to killing Irae), but how would this come about?

Additionally, what do you think Kurgoth's troops will end up doing without their leader?

The Kiaransaleens will probably parley with the lich, but will undoubtetly be wary of the gang as well. By now, Irae must know who is coming - Szith Morcane not answering (?) and any battle with Kurgoth will raise her attention. If I were her, I wouldn't let them into the temple, perhaps into the castle. Irae may easily command the sorcerer if she is suspicious of his behaviour (I'd suggest) - if only to discern the gang's intend.

As for Kurgoth's troops. They may decide to elect new leader/s and continue where he was denied. This could well mean a power struggle between some factions ... perhaps a few of the tanar'ri see their chance to advance as well.

I am sure that the balor (can't remember his name) would win a power struggle.

I just finished up this modual, and enjoyed it a lot. The thing you have to remeber (my players wanted an alliance with her too after they realized how much power she posessed, such as a draco lich and what not) but Irea is a drow, and drow are the most untrustworthy beings ever.

What i would do, give him "parley" or so to speak. Being alone, he probably would wish this, and not want to fight his way there. Sending contacts messangers to her, the key thing that Irea would want to know is if he has his flackery on him. which would be a massive magical aura. depending that, she would either destroy him and his phlacery, and raise him as a sliver wraith 100% under her control, (dead character) and the other PC's wouldnt even be able to tell that he was the wraith they were fighting anyways. Obsorbing a powerful wizard, she has his spell book to offer her wizards, and the untametaly the Shade who she is trying to forge a deal with. The other players will no doubtly have an increadable ammount of trouble without the wizard.

Im sure that the party has good saves, but i really dont see how it is possible to do this modual without a cleric. The ammount of level draining towards the end is death without the proper magic to ward yourself.

But if they wizard doesnt have his phlacery on him, which would be the smart thing, because he could just respawn in a few days, then Irea would most likely lie, and say an alliance has been formed, after they prove themselves worthy and remove all of the invading forces. (this requires a bit more work on your part to spice up the encounters, especially if they have killed the demon/giant already) but whatever powers they use, just be sure that the weave couruption grows more and more, making it that much harder for them to cast spells and what not. Man how did they make it this far without healing? crazy! This is the most cleric essential mod EVER! but once they clear out the place, and return, just have them be zaped with by the Undying temple like every round, the enemies ready to exploit their weaknesses, use illusions to waist spells, have a great deal of "spot checks" that will be impossible unless they can see in magical darkness, as they blow them, then have vampric drow drop down from the sealing as the guys with the smoking tounges come from the front, and an illusion of a balor apears from behind in a smoking ball of flame! Basically, the Pc's should know better than to trust that of drow, and especially the chosen drow follower of the god of undeath and vengance.

If the party falls, something you might want to consider is that Irea will see them as very strong revanents or silver raiths. Her claw will feed her army with fresh souls, guaranteed. In fact i used that on one of the dead durring the last battle. It nearly spilled desaster for them. As for the campain comming to an end, you could say make new characters that are now on the serfice about to withstand the attacks from an undead drow army or revanents, vampires, a draco lich, and perhaps the allies of Shades. Good luck. hope i helped, and thats just what i would do.

Not when 2 of the characters (a half-troll frenzied berserker, shade rogue) have regenerating powers.
And the last one heals with negative energy (sorceror lich) that he can most likely cast himself.

good point, but what about the level draining and stat loss on the non undead characters. thats what seemed to be overbearing for my party, until they got death ward and the likes.

I agree, without Death Ward, Healing, Raise Dead / Ress, and Restorations, this adventure would be a massive challenge IMO.

The Shadow Dragon encounter alone nearly wiped out my party as they had a ton of negative energy levels bestowed on them at the time.
