| Gellion07-27-03, 02:55 AM | I just had this odd idea pop into my head. With the realms being the magic suffused place that they are. I was thinking about maybe putting a very small group of very intelligent people, who instead of practicing magic, studied science. They would be mostly neutral in alignment. They would also set in their base in a Dead-Magic Zone. Perhaps in a cave somewhere. Like i said instead of studying magic, they would study science, and make advanced technilogical items. It would be interesting ot have PCs run into such a group i think. I know there is Lantan, but even they use some magic. I would say they would mostly be Humans. This idea isnt really fully fleshed out, and if you o not like it, that is ok. I just posted it because it just popped into my mind. |
| Jagermeister07-27-03, 02:59 AM | Could be some crazy offshoot following of Gond, who would likely support the whole technology thing. Maybe the "scientists" were once followers of Gond, but have since forsaken the Divine magics for what they believe to be the true manifestation of the faith's dogma: technology over magic. There were some good links to technology/steampunk style stuff on the Homebrew Board (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=295) Just a thought for you. |
| Gellion07-27-03, 04:23 AM | Thanks, those are some pretty cool sites i found.:D |
| Darkmistress07-27-03, 05:55 AM | That may be a bit hard, since I'm led to believe that electronic circuits and suchlike don't work in the Realms. Many gods, particularly Mystra, also disapprove of advanced technology. But I could be wrong, of course. |
| Jagermeister07-27-03, 11:18 AM | Indeed, Gond has to usually get Mystra's (or someone else's) permission prior to introducing new technology to the world. It would be difficult, but not impossible. |
| Gellion07-28-03, 12:09 AM | Bump:) |
| Jagermeister07-28-03, 01:27 AM | Better living through alchemy could also fit in. No magic potions or anything like that, just a naturalist type...using herbs, etc. Like medicine... It is said that while magic bends the laws of physics, technology utilizes them. Here are some altered skills that might fit well (from the Relative Entropy setting, I think). "Astronomy: Knowledge of stars and planets, and their motions through the night sky. Biology: Replaces Knowledge (Nature) as the study of living beings and ecosystems. Chemistry: Knowledge of matter and basic building blocks of the universe, as well as how elements combine to form compound substances. Cosmology: Knowledge (The Planes). Geology: The study of earth sciences, rocks, and minerals, as well as volcanoes and earthquakes. Mathematics: Understanding of numbers, arithmetic, geometry, algebra, etc. Metaphysics: Knowledge (Arcana). Parapsychology: Knowledge (Psionics). Physics: Knowledge of motion, mechanics, electricity, and other subjects pertaining to matter and energy. Psychology: Knowledge of the way intelligent minds work, and behavioral and social patterns of the Thinking Races. Theology & Philosophy: Knowledge (Religion). Xenobiology: A separate category of life sciences, xenobiology is the study of monsters and supernatural life-forms." |
| Cthulhu07-28-03, 02:03 AM | What kind of "advanced tech"? Just standard 21st century technology? Star Wars tech? Superhero tech? |
| Sothran of Waterdeep07-28-03, 03:23 AM | Check out the computer game "Arcanum" (think it´s sierra who published it) for more hints of how a fantasy world would deal with the Idustrial revolution. Magic and tech in one game... As a point, I would make the group either Gnomes or Dwarfs (Gnomish artifiers from MoF for instance is in this direction... slightly. You have to change the magic bit to tech but otherwise it is about what you´re looking for I think...). my two coppers on the subject |

Star Wars, if you really want to make it interesting. Although that may be too much Sci-Fi for some people. Hmmmm i was pondering something if Magic bends the laws of physics and Technolgy utilizes them. What do Psionics do? Bend the laws of physics using your own mind? |
| Cthulhu07-28-03, 01:01 PM | Psionics in 3.0 is based on a persons willpower. He makes things happen through force of consciencness. Forgotten Realms though changed the way Psionics is used by linking it to Mystra's Weave. Why? Not sure because Psionics looks nothing like Arcane magic! |
| BITING-GNOME07-28-03, 06:20 PM | i tried a space station idea once but it failed horrably |
| Amoun07-28-03, 06:51 PM | since when did psionics fall in mystra's weave? Where did you read this? I am curious... this question goes to cthulhu, but if anyone can answer it I would be grateful |
| Cthulhu07-28-03, 07:21 PM | Page 290 of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting under Optional Rules. Actually it doesn't flat out state that Psionics is linked to the Weave, merely that the non-magical psionic variant from the PsiHB is not used. Most people seem to think this means Psionics is a part of the Weave (not unreasonable considering that no mortal on Faerun can use magic without the Weave). I myself just keep Psionics as a seperate source of magic from the Weave so that it resembles the way Psionics is described in its own sourcebook. But that leads to problems (do Psionics operate in Dead Magic Zones than? The answer is obviously yes if its not sourced in the Weave) you may need to consider before using it. |
