| Dargoth06-16-06, 01:19 AM | Darrin Drader posted the following over at the Candlekeep forums Hey guys, New to these forums, not new to the Realms. I'm one of the authors of this book (Mysteries of the Moonsea), so I thought I'd pop in and give some new information. Like many of you, I too was somewhat disappointed when I got the outline for this book and Phlan wasn't mentioned anywhere. Phlan was my gateway to the Forgotten Realms, and I still have a fond spot in my heart for it. That said, Phlan will make an appearance in the web enhancement, and I'm the one writing it. That's the good news. The bad news is that I've ran afoul of some difficult times lately due to a rough pregnancy my wife is going through, and I'm behind on this project. That said, I'm prepared to offer a tiny glimpse into what you can expect from it when it is released. Among other things, the web enhancement will include the following items: * A writeup on the city of Phlan * The sorcerer's island * A sarrukh (and hopefully an official correction on their CR). * A plot hook that extends beyond the adventure in which this will all be framed, which could be the basis for an entire campaign. I hope that this teaser has built up a measure of anticipation, because I intend for this to be one of the truly worthwhile web enhancements. So Phlan will get some updating after all!!!!! :D |
| Razz06-16-06, 02:03 PM | That makes up only a little of what should've been done to Mysteries of the Moonsea. There's still Thar, The Ride, Tortured Land...quite sad to see a regional book dissolve into that crappy book. However, they may have marketed as a region, but it's technically a Campaign Arc book...I just wish they would call it that instead of making everyone think "Lore and info on the Moonsea! Alright! Oh...wait...it's just 37 mini-quests and about 12 pages worth of lore...nevermind" |
| kiesloth06-19-06, 05:16 AM | If you are to correct the Sarrukh be careful of their ability to change the stats of any scaled one, because i dont remember the powers name lets name it BOB. BOB is a Supernatural power that allows to grant spell like abilities and supernatural abilities(among others). Does this mean Sarrukh can grant a scaled one the use of BOB??   |

I'm not saying that you have to like the new format but to say that they tricked us into thinking it was a regional sourcebook is just untrue. |
| dunehunter06-19-06, 07:08 AM | *is actually looking forward to getting his hands on this book* I've just started a new campaign with all the players as Zhentilar (or soon to be Zhentilar), and I could use some quick adventures :) |

Just don't get upset when all future regional books look like MotM and you start complaining "Where's the FR lore, new spells, feats, PrC, and monsters?" ;) |

If you noticed, despite that fact, people still had high hopes believing that there'd be enough "fluff" inbetween. Which, of course to everyone's discontent now that it's released, is not the case with MotM. |

Of course, everyone loves to look at my post's in the most darkest light possible...are people naturally negative on these boards? I was merely enlightening the guy. :D |
| DM_Jeff06-21-06, 09:21 AM | If this has been answered elsewhere, I hadn't found it: but, has anyone asked Sean K. Reynolds if he missed the page of the outline that says "start each adventure with a few loosely connected plot hooks so you know why the heck PCs are supposed to go there"? I mean, the adventures may not be stellar, but I consider them quite good and I think they do their job well: they got my brain going on how to expand them and further link them. And, as a busy DM I appreciate the work being done for me. On that note, however, the adventures in Sean's section don't include the 3-4 bullet points on possible ways to link the adventure with previous and future plot threads, and so while reading them I'm not even sure why or how the PCs would be motivated to follow up on some of the leads. I'm sure there was a purpose, but were they dropped from his section by accident or what? Unfortunately that makes his section read like generic, disjointed adventures rather than part of an overarcing storyline. -DM Jeff |
| D_Drader06-21-06, 04:39 PM | That makes up only a little of what should've been done to Mysteries of the Moonsea. There's still Thar, The Ride, Tortured Land...quite sad to see a regional book dissolve into that crappy book. I agree that there is a lot more information that needs to go into a region book about the Moonsea. However, they may have marketed as a region, but it's technically a Campaign Arc book...I just wish they would call it that instead of making everyone think "Lore and info on the Moonsea! Alright! Oh...wait...it's just 37 mini-quests and about 12 pages worth of lore...nevermind" I think you hit the nail on the head here. In my mind, especially when I was working on it, I was equating this more with Ruins of Adventure/Pool of Radiance than I was any current region books. The one thing that's missing is an overarching storyline tying it all together. Also, in my experience, books with the words "Mysteries of...." in the title usually focus more on things that are off the beaten path. I've done a bunch of work for Bastion Press and a couple years ago we released a book called "Mysteries of Arena." This was released after the primary region book was out, and was all about magical locations, NPCs, and other similar things. Granted, in this case there isn't a 3rd edition sourcebook for the Moonsea. Should there be? I think that's debatable. On one hand, I'd love to see a nice hardback book that has all the reference material I need for a game, along with 3rd edition stats for NPCs, some crucnhy goodness to flesh out NPCs with, and some organizations specific to this region. On the other hand, there's a lot of material on this area from 2E, and truth be told, there hasn't been that much change outside of the areas we detail in Mysteries of the Moonsea. Finally, not being with WotC, all I'm doing here is guessing at what is really going on, but I doubt that the FR regional sourcebooks will start looking like Mysteries of the Moonsea. In fact, I'd be pretty surprised if this format was anything other than a one-off type book. My own personal preference is for books with a lot of detail and little crunch, like Silver Marches. Anyway, what I'm saying is that, knowing WotC, I doubt you have much to worry about for upcoming region books. As far as this book goes, buy it if you have a use for it. Don't if it doesn't appeal to you. :) |
| BrianCritchley06-21-06, 05:06 PM | as I understand it regional books are one of the hottest selling items, adventure books the lowest selling items, thus the possiability that WOTC could look at the profits of MOM and immediatly decide "this is the future" is.. unlikely |
| runestar06-28-06, 04:40 AM | If you are to correct the Sarrukh be careful of their ability to change the stats of any scaled one, because i dont remember the powers name lets name it BOB. Actually, if they use the ability on a scaled one, said ability should not affect their original cr, but rather, the cr of the scaled one they are improving. Since it cannot be used on themselves, the power is useless if say, you are facing it alone, and thus should not be factored into its cr. However, if it uses that power to upgrade its minions before throwing them at you, that would probably require an ad-hoc increase to the minion's cr to reflect the new challenge it poses. |
| Kaewin07-03-06, 09:54 PM | I bought the book and I did hope for a little more, But out of it all my least favorite part was the section on Melvaunt. I thought the stories were week and a bit force. You don't have a npc trying to keep his status as a Harper secret then envole him in everything. He nkows what you are doing, where you do it at and where you should go next. Like I said I didn't like it. |

Bring the regional books back!! ;) I didn't like (I hate it) the Mysteries of the Moonsea format but your comments just made my day! |

Sooo...you're saying that the FRCS has sufficient information to run a Moonsea campaign? ;) |
| GothicDan07-05-06, 04:00 AM | It all depends on how much detail and accuracy you want. Technically, you could run any campaign and call the region the "Moonsea" with no other information or maps needed. It's just a matter of factual rightness. |
| Tobus Neth07-05-06, 04:17 AM | Sooo...you're saying that the FRCS has sufficient information to run a Moonsea campaign? ;) Yes and all the 2nd edition information is also good. |
| David E07-09-06, 04:17 AM | Yes and all the 2nd edition information is also good. However, to a FR fan like myself who has not been playing since 2nd edition, MotM is essentially all I have for regional information on the Moonsea - unless someone can point me to the 2nd ed. material. Although I completely understand that people who have been playing since 2nd edition might be annoyed when WotC rehashes some material in a new FR book, almost all of it is new to me! I'd love to learn more about Zhentil Keep than the 10 pages in MotM reveal. *sigh* |

It is well worth the purchase. I am a bit OCD about having hard copies of my sourcebooks, that's why I used ebay. If you don't care about such things you can buy the .pdf version of the Moonsea sourcebook at RPGnow.com for only $4.95. Here's the link...
