I want to introduce the free adventure "the burning plague" to my players in a somewhat modified form to make it better suited for my campaign situated in Daggerdale.
Most "dramatic" change would be to change the Gruumsh cleric into a Cyric cleric. Would that make sense to you? Or do you think Cyric might not be an appropriate choice?

I'd like some opinions from you all.

Cyricist are no longer common the Moonsea/Dalealnds area thanks to the Tyrant Fog, also Plague is not a thing Cyric is known for

My Suggestion: Replace the Orc Cleric with either a Cleric of Talona (Goddess of Plague and disease) or Shar. If you go with Shar you could use the burning plague as lead for a wider campaign. Perhap the Cleric of Shar is working for Shade enclave and the Shades are trying to develope a nasty plague on the Dalealnds and Moonsea so they can take over those areas.

I think Talona would be appropriate or how about tweaking it a little and having the Cult of the Dragon or better yet the Zhentarim behind it. I personally would go with the Zhents I think it would fit better given Daggerdale’s write up in the FRCS. :smirk:

Oh another thing you don’t even have to swap out the orc of Gruumsh, you could just have his tribe be commissioned and supplied by the Zhents just change some of his gear to reflect that and this way your players still get that powerful enemy of Gruumsh and every orc in the area at first level plus in return they will now have good standing and allies in Daggerdale where Lord Randal Morn can hire them out for further adventures against the Zhentarim and to help pacify the dale’s wildlands.

Well, they have returned after that. The fog did a good job to get rid of them for some time, but they're back (Moonsea is listed as one of the strongest places of Cyric's church)

Anyway, i agree that Talona would be the best deity for this adventure

Oops, forgot to mention we're not playing in "the present time". We play "a few years back" so Cyric is still strong in the area.

Thanks for the input everybody!
I think I'll go with Harlamond's option and have the Zhentarim contract the orcs.

Which really doesnt make any sense

Now unless Thousands of Cyrics followers entered the Moonsea after the Tyrant fog, I dont see how the Moonsea can be considered a Cyricist stronghold.

Almost all his worshipers died during the Tyrant fog

Cyricist dont control any cities or even operate any temples in the Moonsea are

Why not? It's not as if there aren't enough Cyricists.

If anything the Moonsea area has become much more attractive since all present Cyric cells have been destroyed.

The new Cyricists who are the quickest to rush to the now deserted area and rebuild cells of Cyricists are the most likely to become among the most powerfull in the area when more and more Cyric followers return

Almost all his worshippers in this area died during the Tyrant fog. Cyric has many more at many more places.

Cyric finally returned to his basics and stopped running foolish grant temples and big parades and all such nonesense.

How can you know how many temples of Cyric are hidden in the foulest areas of the sewers under Zhentil Keep even while the church of Bane is just holding a parades in the streets above them?

How many small thieves guilds have turned to Cyric, as the only "ally" in their daily fight against the organized crime of the guilds serving the church of Bane?

You could always keep the orc & make him a cleric of Yurtrus, the Orcish god of Death & Decay..

That is, if there is a direct need for Disease to be part of the villain's spell domain.

Gruumsh worked fine as the deity of choice when I ran the adventure.

I would think both the big organized ones and the small "chaotic" ones would rather worship Mask, god of theivery.

Assasin's Guild would worship him, though.

Theres no reference to thousands of Cyrics followers entering the Moonsea. While it makes repeated statements about Cyricsits being driven from the Moonsea area.

Cyric should have an exstremely small following in Moonsea at the moment

Every god probably has at least one worshiper in any iven area of Faerun, however that doesnt many that every area is a favoured area for that deity. Cyric simply doesnt have enough worshipers in the Moonsea to justify it being a favoured area.

And Bane shouldn't have Amn as a favored region and Cyric should get Thay as a favored region.

Where's the point?

I agree about Bane and Amn, Bane should have The Lake of Steam instead dur to Mintar.

I dont agree with Cyric getting Thay thou, Thayans are very Lawful the 2 most prominat religions would be Kossuth and Bane

And still: Cyric was once very popular Thay. He lost much of this popularity because of this whole madness thing, but his church in Thay is still strong and organized, even UE says that.

Also Thay has a guild of assassins sposored by the gouverment whose members worship Cyric (The Tower of Swift Dead) and Cyric's Legion and Cyric's Sisters are part of Thay's army.

If that doesn't make Thay a favored region for him, than i don't know what. His certainly is much more open and tolerated in Thay than are his hidden temples in Amn.

Couple of things to bare in mind

Most of the followers Cyric picked up in Thay where Banites, who would have converted back to Bane when he returned.

I didnt see any mention of the Tower of the Swift Death in Unapprachable east they may not be around anymore or may have converted to someone else.

Judging by the write up for the Blackflame Zealots in looks like that group may now fill the role.
