| Dragonfey04-01-04, 08:37 PM | The shinning South by Thomas Reid... http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/0786934921/qid=1080869199/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_0_3/701-5096893-3545158 The land of the beholders is back :behold: |
| rottenking8204-01-04, 08:50 PM | Interesting...I had though Serpent Kingdoms was it for this year. Hopefully you're right. |
| Dargoth04-01-04, 11:01 PM | Interesting, I wonder what nations it will cover |
| Kuje3104-01-04, 11:19 PM | Well the old Shining South sourcebook covered Halruaa, Dambrath, Luiren, Durpar, Var, Estagund, and Ulgarth. So I assume the new one should cover some of those. :) |
| Dargoth04-01-04, 11:27 PM | I wonder if Var or Durpar will be Zakaraised ie something similar to the Shou migrants in Thesk |
| Kuje3104-01-04, 11:36 PM | Originally posted by Dargoth I wonder if Var or Durpar will be Zakaraised ie something similar to the Shou migrants in Thesk OOOOO. That would be nice to have some Zakhara info if it is so. :) |
| Dargoth04-02-04, 01:01 AM | Im actually abit suprised that they did Shining South it was one of the late FR gaming accessorys (FR 14) Im suprised they didnt do some the earlier ones like Bloodstone Lands |

But I guess they feel there is a need to update that part of the world....... |
| Dargoth04-02-04, 01:31 AM | Well I guess between SK and SS they'll have finished off the southern coastline from Chult to Var the Goldern |
| Faraer04-02-04, 09:04 AM | I think this is Thomas Reid's first Realms sourcebook work other than helping Steven Schend with The Wyrmskull Throne. Be interesting to see how he does and what approach he took. Can't say I like the title recycling. Though strictly speaking, if we refer to this new book as The Shining South and call Tom Prusa's existing one by its full title of FR16 The Shining South or just FR16, we'll be OK. |

Yeah, this is at least the fifth title that's been recycled. That kinda bugs me, too. On another thread, someone was asking a question about Kara-Tur and said they had Oriental Adventures, and I had to ask which one so I could make sure we were on the same page! :P |
| Lashan04-02-04, 11:53 AM | I don't mind the recycling of names. I mean, if people just said "the old 2E Oreintal Adventures" when they meant it, or by default, the newer one. It's not such a big deal to me. I was a bit suprised when they said this area was getting detailed, as well. Still, though, there are some rabid Halrau fans out there. Perhaps they got a voice in. Personally, I am looking forward to the other areas that haven't been detailed as much. I like that data always much more then a repeat of older data. Just like with UE, I don't think I have read much at all about Thay or Rasheman. |

But I'm seriously doubting it's because of any fan input. We already know how important that hasn't been in the past. |
| Tempus66504-02-04, 12:27 PM | Another mystery solved...I´m actually glad they´re doing Shining South :) I´ve recently began to get a real interest in the Golden Water and the lands around it; I was looking at the art in the 2e Shining South, and these lands intrigued me. Happy me :D |
| Faraer04-02-04, 12:54 PM | Well, to get really analytic about it, I don't like 'the old 2E' -- I prefer to save 'old' for things that are really old, not just a decade or two, and calling something a '2E sourcebook' implies the game system is some fundamental characteristic of it rather than just the ruleset it happened to have been published for. Since FR16 is among the less good of the FR-series, the new one could well be an improvement. Though I'm far more interested in the Heartlands than anywhere outside. |
| druid berrymore04-02-04, 02:02 PM | Yeah, I'm more of a heartlands kinda guy too. I never bothered with "The Shining South", or "Empires of the Shining Sea". Do these two products overlap in their material? |
| Kuje3104-02-04, 02:13 PM | Originally posted by druid berrymore Yeah, I'm more of a heartlands kinda guy too. I never bothered with "The Shining South", or "Empires of the Shining Sea". Do these two products overlap in their material? Nope. Empires of the Shining Sea is Calimshan, Amn, and Tethyr. The later two box sets updated those lands from what was in that original book. |
| druid berrymore04-02-04, 02:18 PM | So "Empires of the Shining Sea" and "Lands of Intrigue" detail the same areas? *Sorry for the diversion from the topic* |
| Faraer04-02-04, 02:21 PM | Empires of the Shining Sea is Calimshan and the lands around the Lake of Steam, so you've got the Shaar between that and the Shining South places. While I got a going-through-motions sense from FR16 (for which I don't blame Prusa but TSR for hiring him -- he does a better Realms than Rick Swan, I'll say that), Empires of the Shining Sea is big and thorough and fun, perhaps Steven Schend's best Realms work, though his Calishite names are too literally Arabian. |
| Kuje3104-02-04, 02:25 PM | Originally posted by druid berrymore So "Empires of the Shining Sea" and "Lands of Intrigue" detail the same areas? *Sorry for the diversion from the topic* Yup. :) But I originally meant Empires of the Sands, then the two box sets Lands of Intrigue and Empire of the Shining Sea updated Empires of the Sands. Sorry for the mix up. :) |
| Sammael_the_Chosen04-02-04, 03:01 PM | I sure hope the book will cover the Shaar as well... |
| Monsoon2804-02-04, 08:11 PM | Im actually abit suprised that they did Shining South it was one of the late FR gaming accessorys (FR 14) Im suprised they didnt do some the earlier ones like Bloodstone Lands Just to point out FR16 Shining South may have been the last of the FR books but that was still published way back in 1993. Also keep in mind 5 of these books weren't really locale books: magister, hall of heroes', Gold & Glory, Cities of Mystery, and Dwarves Deep (though focused mostly on Dwarf culture, it did show case a little of the Great Rift/The Deeps). So of the other 9 books a number of them have seen a great deal of focus or are likely to be ignored (horde). That leaves us with Anauroch, The Great Glacier, The Moonshae Isles, The Bloodstone lands and The Shining South. Personally of these five regions I'd like to see them revisit the Isles again. But any info on any of them I'll hungrily gobble up! My half-copper's worth |
| realmprotector04-02-04, 09:08 PM | I'm glad to see this area updated. Hopefully they will include some of Elaine Cunninghams ideas from her books. Also I would love to see the Moonshea's Updated! |
| davelozzi04-03-04, 02:28 PM | Originally posted by Lashan I don't mind the recycling of names. I mean, if people just said "the old 2E Oreintal Adventures" when they meant it But there was no 2e Oriental Adventures. The original book was 1e. :D But back to the point, I do find the recycling of names a bit annoying. Also, I don't think The Shining South was the best choice of region. I'd rather see an updated Old Empires. Maybe that will be next, as they circle around the southern coast and back up towards the Inner Sea. An updated Bloodstone Lands would certainly be welcome. On the other hand, the main problem with the original Shining South was that they tried to cover too large of an area in one fell swoop. Hopefully, with the larger (hardcover) books they do these days, that will be less of a problem. |
| Montycat04-05-04, 06:13 PM | what will be next, north or west? |
| Ashen Victor04-05-04, 08:01 PM | The Sea of Fallen Stars please!!!!!! |
| smashthedean04-05-04, 08:14 PM | What I think would be cool would be some sort of "Oceans of Faerun" book that would cover things such as aquatic races, island nations, sea travel in the realms, and piracy. I think a product like that could be a real hit plus there is little currently existing information about these things that I've found. |
| Desies04-05-04, 09:27 PM | I'm glad to see a Shining South book, because our newest campaign takes place in Halruua. Wonder when it'll be out? Until then I have an Expanded Psionics book to wait for. On a side note an "Oceans of Faerun" or an "Island Kingdoms" book would be nice. I'd just like to see lots of information on Lantan and Evermeet. |
| Kuje3104-05-04, 09:49 PM | BTW, Ed hinted that WOTC has plans for two of these three places. Lantan, Nelanther, and Nimbral, when I asked him if he could give us any info on them. He said no I can't right now because WOTC has either a sourcebook, novel, or web article planned for two of them. The third one he'd try to detail later. |
| Klyden04-05-04, 10:51 PM | Must have info on Amn! Must have info on Black Spires of the Maiden, in the Vale of Wailing Woman! We wants it! We needs it! |
| Pystian04-06-04, 04:58 AM | My timing stinks (or perhaps WotC's does?). We just started our campaign in Luiren not too long ago. Would've been nice to already have the 3.5 Shining South. Oh well, c'est la vie. |
| blank_image04-06-04, 05:20 AM | Hopefully the new Shinning South book will be better than the previous 2e one. It’s beyond me how the author managed to move the capital of an entire region a large distance north and fill it with hordes of undead, and no one caught the mistake. This, along with a few other minor mistakes made the book quite bad. Maybe this time they will get it right. |
