| Ferol, Debtor of Torm03-02-05, 03:40 PM | //rant on I'm sure I've asked this before, but I don't feel like I got a good enough answer to satisfy me. Why is it that people hate religion and "God" so much in real life that they loath the idea of playing a pious character in a fantasy game. Every thread I read always depicts all churchs/dieties in the realms as some some sort of twisted Catholic church with clerics/druids/paladins/rangers/other divine prc being powerless losers who plead with their powerhungry god for spells. Alot threads often complain about the ideas of druids, rangers, wizards, etc having a patron as some sort of restriction. How about you try to think of the whole patron thing in a good light? A patron diety can be an excellent way to help flesh out a character. Even for completely mundane classes like rouges and fighters. Perhaps instead of your next character being an ur-priest who loaths all dieties and only strives to destroy all that is good an orderly in the realms you roll up a monk of red knight who is casual about his worship, but still thankful for the magic he receives (even if it is just a little). //rant off |
| Mystery Man03-02-05, 04:09 PM | Ah better not... Which of your players hates God? He/she does realize this is a game right? |
| shadow_walker2.003-02-05, 04:23 PM | well I think that most people try to put a bit of themselves in there cheracters and if they are "anti-god" the cheacter must be "anti-god" but the thing is that in FR gods play a big role they exist they even some times walk the relmes themselves. but if this dosen't help you then try telling your fellow gamer that it dosen't matter what you belive in you still belive in some thing and if they read some of the flavor text they'll see just how different FR religion is from real reliogion. |
| Ferol, Debtor of Torm03-02-05, 04:42 PM | Thankfully none of the players in the game I'm involved in feel this way, but its become an annoyingly common trend around these boards. Everytime people get to talking about power it always degrades into..."Well being a Psion is better because than you don't have to a gods lapdog!" or "FR magic system blows because I can't be an evil world conquering wizard becase Mystra will turn off my magic powers". |
| Mystery Man03-02-05, 04:50 PM | Well I don't know if its necessarily having to do with hating God in real life, and even if they do there's not much you can do about that. It may be due to the ever pervasiveness that Gods have in FR that may irritate some people. They may prefer that Gods take a more distant and less intrusive approach rather than God(s) as a plot device. It sort of depends on the individual DM how much God(s) he injects into the campaign, too much throwing around godlike powers can take away from the players having much to do with the plot. |
| WizO_BigSister03-02-05, 05:21 PM | Sorry but long and bitter experience has shown the WotC team that discussing real world religion on these forums firstly never actually offers much help in playing the game, and secondly always ends in a flame war, and thirdly offends and distresses a significant number of our members. The subject is permanently banned, so I am closing this thread. |
