Another newb post i suppose... But I Have been struggling all day, trying to read more and more post's, get a understanding for the lore, find information i need to develop my character, get a basic understanding of the realms ect..
But in some aspects, and in general the saying the more you know the more you realize how much you dont know is proving to be true..
So I have a rough understanding of what i want my character to be(Im still not clear on the different racial groups Aside from the ones listed in the Phb).
So I guess I will just list a bunch of questions and hope someone can help me....
1) How do people make races, classes, ect..?
-I dont want to make one, but i keep reading threads of people creating there own race, or breed, or class, and wonder how is this possible? Is there a limit, what factors are included? What method is used to calculate the skills for the breed, or for the new class..?
2) When writting history for a character, I assume that anything goes, and as long as it complies to the over all feeling of the realms its possible.. For instance, say my character was born in thay but i cant find any information on that town, Is it safe for me to say that i can basically use my imagination, to descibe his house, his family, his ancestory, names, people he knew, stores, Inns he might have visited?
3)I want for my character to have been from a desert, or a 'mid east' inspired location.. Which from reading these boards have led me in the direction of,(pardon my mispelling if there is any) Anaurouh and zakhara(any others?) and where should i look to find out more about these places?
4) As far as magic, or echantments are concerned, How does one aquire such things, Do they have to be already created(in hand books) or is it something that a user can create, but has to be realistic(according to the realms)...And Do these items have to be won during the actual game play, or can the character start with these things(assuming he has already had a history of adventuring)...
Thanks for any help...

1- Its all a matter of game balance. People do this all the time over on the main boards. It's a combination of art and science, each ability is about this good, here is a down point....this looks like a +2 LA creature.
As you become more comfortable with the rules it becomes easier.

2- Ask your DM how much flexibility you have. You may be helping them develop that area by providing those little details. Generally speaking few ever go to so much trouble detailing every tavern they ever visited, but it's not bad if you wish to.

3- Also Calishite, this one is a free download on wizards main site (classics page)

4- This to is up to the DM.
Some items can be won in game play, bought in game play, or created during game play.
Starting with them is a different story, there is a "by level wealth chart".
For the most part, DMs will not let you have equipment that is worth more then is allowed by that chart.
As for making new items not published, there are rules to govern that, (Each spell is worth X, times X amount times a day......) so those items can be placed with the wealth by character suggestions.
I'd hold off on creating new items until you gain a better feel for the rules as a whole, there are hundreds of items to choose from already detailed for you in various places.

-That's something they do on the General D&D Boards all the time. As for how, here's what you need: an idea. It's that simple. Make up your race, but keep it balanced. So, the Zoobooboos that you created can cast Wish at will eh? They'd better have a hefty ECL to balance such power out. Basically, it's all about keeping everything balanced and believable.

2) When writting history for a character, I assume that anything goes, and as long as it complies to the over all feeling of the realms its possible.. -In no sourcebook does it go into that much detail (except maybe Waterdeep). As long as you keep the general regional/national cultural identity alive, putting your own spin on things is encouraged. For example, say all of the people in Country X are blue, speak Swahili and have two thumbs. As long as the town/character you make up adheres to this rule, everything is fine.

3)I want for my character to have been from a desert, or a 'mid east' inspired location.. Which from reading these boards have led me in the direction of,(pardon my mispelling if there is any) Anaurouh and zakhara(any others?) and where should i look to find out more about these places?

-For a Middle-Eastern flavor, there are the Bedine, in the Anauroch, there are the Calashites, and there are the Zakharans. That's really all there is.

-Well, this is really up to the DM. There are lots of ways to aquire magical items. You can buy them, you can have enchantments placed upon them by fellow PCs with theright abilities, or by NPCs who do those kinds of things. You can find magical weapons in dungeons, and what not.

-The DM's Guide has a chart that says how much GP a character that is not Level 1 should start with. Even if you have characters who have been adventuring, but are still level 1, I'd not give them any special abilties, or weapons.

I agree that the general boards can be of great assistance to you. I also have to echo what the other posters have said. Also, have fun and welcome.
