I have this Ranger in my party that is Ranged Focused and every time we get together to play he asks about "The Hunt", or some type of Archery competition. Since i could find only limited reference to Tournaments or other Sporting Contests, i made my own rules.

Please feel free to post advice or suggestions, or even use this in Your CW.

Rules of the Range

No Magical enhancements to your skills with the Bow.

No personal bows or arrows allowed on the competition field.

Only competitors are allowed on the field during the competition.

Any outside assistance or unauthorized equipment will immediately result in disqualification.

Only one person on the firing line at a time.

Any unsportsmanlike conduct will result in dismissal from the contest.

ANY modification of competition equipment by any means (magical or otherwise) will result in immediate disqualification from the competition as well as forfeiture of any titles or prizes won.

Rounds will consist of 3, and only 3, arrows per person.

Round 1 will be at 50 feet and progress in 50 ft. increments for 5 rounds.

Any ties will be resolved by a single arrow at one additional range increment of 50 ft.

Point Values will increase with each range increment.

Double points will be awarded for each Arrow Split with a consecutive shot.

Winner will be determined by TOTAL points accumulated for 5th round ONLY.

If a winner is not established by the end of the 5th round then the sudden death round will be 1 shot closest to the Bulls eye.

if you look in hte 2e stuff there is actually a description of a yearly ranger gather and the kinds of affairs that happen. There is also a description of such a gather in one of the novels - the drow actually raid it (to their misfortune).

While your contest looks very well organized in many respects its way to organized for a bunch of lone wolves like rangers. I can see it being split into 3-4 levels (beginers<no magic items, only levels before spell use>, intermediates<+1 arrows/bows and level 1-2 spells>, Expert <upto +3/+3 strength bows, 3rd level spells>, Master <your best weapon, any spells you personally can cast>) with divisions for crossbow, short bow and long bow. 3 rounds is reasonable - 1 at each distance increment. there might also be similar constests for thrown weapons and for things like distance, number of shots in a set time, number of different (mansized) targets hit in a set time or with a set number of arrows, number of bullseyes out of a set number of arrows, breaking sticks or hitting special targets (helmet eye slits etc), etc.
basically your taking about rangers - keep it simple and keep it focused on skills and interests they would actually have while maintaining a reasonable but probably not totally fair contest.

Master <your best weapon, any spells you personally can cast>

Say hello to my 1 level of wizard and true strike. What's the point of calling it an archery competition if you're allowed to use magic? It'd be like hunting with a magic missile...

That said, though, I agree that anyone should be allowed to bring their own bow... as long as it's nonmagical or temporarily suppressed of magic.

The reason i have limited Magic in this contest is so that it test the TRUE skill of a Ranger, or other Archer. Keep it Simple, keep it Fair. If you are having a Test of Skill, not a Test of Power, then you would want to limit if not completely remove the Magic aspect from the contest. This forces Rangers and any other Archers to use thier Feats and Skills to compensate for the lack of Magic they have become accustomed to in thier daily lives.

In this manner you stop making it an Exibition, and you make it a Contest. Is it truly fair to let a Ranger/Wizard use a Seeking Bow, with True Strike, and Magical bonuses to hit compete against a Fighter/Ranger with a +3/+3 Mighty Bow of Distance, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization?

Or would it be more fair to to just let them use personal skills and give them both the same non-magical bow, non-magical arrows, and let it be a contest of Physical and Personal skill.

for that matter is it really fair to have a level 1 ranger competing agaisnt a level 20 ranger even if everything else is held equal? I can see keeping the spells out of the contest entirely (true strike is a good reason) but you are still going to have to split it into skill groups to maintain some fairness. ALso, simply making a good (let alone MW quality) long bow or composite long bow is not a trivial task - making enough of them to run a contest (at least 20) is even less trivial. If you read the background on these events they are most like the old spring mountainman gathers of the 1820-1840s (ie. very impromptu and slightly drunken affairs with little or no detailed organization.) I can see the sort of contest you are describing as being run by a nation/regional power (rather like the Sheriff of Nottingham did to draw out Robin Hood) but one more like mine for the ranger gathers. At the highest levels yoru right it would be more show than contest but then again yoru talking about these high level characters bragging about what they can do in the field and then proving it by doing it for all to see more than you are a formal contest with prizes and so allowing them their spells and magic makes sense.

so basically some very different rules for different contests depending on who is doing it, where and why. :)
