I see a lot of 'Favorite Writer' threads, but I wonder if the fans have similar tastes for artists.

This is not a --he is better than she is-- thread, I appreciate every artist that has ever contributed to this roleplaying universe. So I'll ask...

Which D&D artists do you like?

Personally-

1st Edition: Darlene Pekul, pg.48 of the original DMG 1979 (full page). I wonder if that piece went with an adventure? Like a lot of them do.

1st Edition: Bill Willingham, I believe he gave us the very first look at what a Drow Elf looks like. Original Fiend Folio, if I'm not mistaken.

1st Edition: ...and speaking of the Fiend Folio, the cover by Emmanuel is one of the best Githyanki's I've ever seen.

2nd Edition: Players Handbook, pg.7 by Larry Elmore is the quintessential representation of an adventuring party IMO. This is another one I am not sure of. Was it used in any official module?

3rd Edition: Todd Lockwood, Greg Staples

Others: I think these guys have also done some work as well - DiTerlizzi and R K Post

3rd Edition: Matt Wilson (mainly that Elaith Craulnobur pic), Arnie Swekel, Tony DiTerlizzi, Todd Lockwood, Sam Wood, Wayne Reynolds, Matt Cavotta, many more...

Most of the artists in Deities and Demigods were excellent!

This is slightly off topic, but I'd like to mention it anyway.

The new art, atleast, the art found in the core rulebooks is what attracted all the members of my current group.

I had played with other groups years ago but when I finally made the change to 3rd Edition and picked up the books, it was obvious what drew them in.

I'd have to say that by this logic that the artwork for 3rd Edition is far more stimulating than that of previous editions.

I guess the younger folk I play with just gotta have impressive graphics for a game to be worth playing,

Easley and Elmore are by far my two favorite artists that have worked on D&D products.

While I find most of the 3rd Edition art tolerable --and some bits are actually good, I'll stick with the the art of 2nd Edition as my favorite representation of the game.

Some of my faves:

1E: Stephen Fabian (1E Manual of the Planes; also many of the 2E Ravenloft products).

2E: Tony DiTerlizzi (of course!).

3E: I absolutely love Vinod Rams (sp?). Beautiful watercolor! And I think Glen Angus is fantastic too.

I believe it's Wayne Reynolds... or as my borther and I call him, no-wrist-think-neck man :D. He drew the Graft Weapon for the PsiHB, and numerous gods in Deities & Demigods... have I got the right guy?

Who does the sketches at the beginning of each chapter for books like PHB, DMG & Book of Vile Darkness? I really like those.

(if anyone recalls his name)

The guy who did the pen and ink character portraits from 1E Hall of Heroes, and a couple of excellent ones from 2E Heroes' Lorebook is one of my faves as well.

From 3E, Stawicki, Lockwood.

From 2E, Brom mostly.

From 1E, some of Easly's stuff (though too many of his models looked like 80s B-movie ladies  )

And of course, the Godfather, Larry Elmore, who got me into cracking open the books, and who remains one of my core artistic influences.

I don't like any 3rd edition art (it all looks like reject Magic cards), but I adore the old D&D and AD&D art.
