Grand History of the Realms. Awesome book, worst art I have ever seen in a Forgotten Realms book, and that includes the black and white sketches in the FRCS.

Scavenged art. The last 3e FR sourcebook, and you couldn't commision a single artist?

Kisonraathiisars's slow demise. That is a warforged. Your not fooling anyone. Yeah warforged are cool, but keep them in Eberron.

The Dawn Cataclysm. Anyone care to explain why the cleric of Lathander has the symbol of Pelor, a Greyhawk deity, all over him? Anyone? Thought not.

The destruction of Jhaamdath. A walkway lined by ectoplasmic sculpture leads the a hole in a round tidal wave, and the psion's go about their daily business even with their impeding doom almost upon them. What's this? The big round thing is a building? Wow WotC, you had me fooled!

Dang, second time in 2 minutes. :D
They recycled a lot of existing art, so they could spend most (all?) of their art budget to maps. I think Brian said it in one of the other GHotR threads.

Ah found it!

(This is from Brian R james, the one who made the original GHotR.pdf and who also worked on the book)

For once I'm not upset about the artwork in a book :)
I like nice maps far more than nice artwork:cloud9:
The Ichiban undead from Rokugan made me giggle however (a good giggle btw).

The pictures that worked were fine - I didn't mind them at all - but the ones that were 'force fitted' really should have just been left out, IMHO.

I guess the OP doesn't have that old 2e series like Code of the Harpers. That art was truly dreadful

I don't mind the recycled pictures too much. As Karsus said, I'm glad they spent their limited budget on maps that can help me understand the History of the Realms rather than on new images (though I would have prefered both, of course).

However, there are many of those pictures that simply don't fit the text they're supposed to illustrate, or even the captions under them. The warforged-for-a-dragon is the worse of the lot, but it's not the only one. There are many pages that would have been better with no illustraion at all than pictures that have nothing to do with the text. It makes the layout of the book seems very unprofessional. It won't prevent me from buying the book, butit really gives the impresison that WotC just wanted to make some quick money without having to spend a copper more than necessary. I know 3rd edition is about to end, but it's no reason to drop the quality for the books still to be released.

I think Elves of Evermeet is what first got me hating Elves... the pictures make them look llike some sort of bizarre human-lizard crossbreeds - with scales!

(Look at the one of Prince Lamruil to see what I mean) :yuck:

I think the gods looked better in 2e, though. The females actually looked feminine, rather then men in drag.

The art work chosen for this book was very nice in and of itself, so it's all good - I just wish they had left out those pics that were obviously wrong.
