trolloc 01-25-07, 03:43 PM	At one of the Local Gaming Store, i found 3 FR books for like 20.00$ CAD each. They are Forgotten Realms Campaign setting, The Silver Marches, and Champions of Ruin. They are used in nearly new condition, i know since i compared them next to the new books which are just 3 meters away. Are they a worthy purchased? Do they offered anything in general or are they very very realm specific? I didn't browse through them at the store. I do not play currently in FR, actually i am on a rpg break, but who knows in the near future. I was just wondering if they are good books to have them around to read. Yea i do have the financial means, and this seem like a good deal.
Thelandrach 01-25-07, 04:28 PM	That's probably a really good price for them, if you need them. If you're going to run a campaign in FR, the first book will be invaluable. If you want to set it in Silver Marches, the second book will be invaluable, less so if you set the campaign somewhere else. I didn't find much to use in Champions of Ruin as I mostly run published modules.

trolloc 01-26-07, 04:49 PM	"general" as in i can used the crunch in a homebrew campaign. Also, if i like a particular area or locale i can drop it in any setting. I also like to read rpg books for their fluff, but i am not a collector. I was wondering if they aren't disaster books (i.e: MM IV, Cityscape) , to avoid them. But the review seem pretty good.
Dark Wizard 01-26-07, 05:23 PM	Both the FRCS and Silver Marches are very setting specific, so it really depends on whether or not you feel like paying for a book for which you'll only use roughly half the material if at all. The FRCS does have the regional feat system along with a number of regular feats, spells, and prestige classes. However, most of the crunch has appeared in an updated from in one book or another (DMG for Archmage and Red Wizard PrCs, regional feats in PGtF and many spells in the spell Compendium). Silver Marches is more focused on setting material, locations, towns, sites, history. Champions of Ruin has lots of crunch (especially for evil NPCs or PCs) and even the setting material is very modular. You could lift an organization or NPC into a variety of settings. The setting specific material really depends on how you feel like being. You could definitely dissect the setting and cannibalize pieces of it for other settings and games, but some don't like to do that.
Mr.Sinister 01-26-07, 07:04 PM	I'd also agree that for that price, the FR Campaign Setting book is a must-buy. Reading through it just a little will make you want more and next thing you know, your next campaign is set on Faerūn ;) Although the information might have changed as noted above, Silver Marches was in my opinion, a very good book for it's time. At that price, if you end up liking FR, it's a good buy. Champion of Ruins I will abstain. As I don't own the book and have given it only brief review. So, if you can afford it, go both FRCS and SM :)
