Attacks of Oppurtunity [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was just wondering if you think the following would invoke an AoO:

We are standing at the edge of a drop and the have our tiefling rogue tied to a rope and hanging about 20ft down the drop when some phase spiders appear next us, as combat starts our barabarian starts to pull the rope up to get rogue up asap.

Now does the barbarian take an attack of oppurtunity from a spider if he is within its threat range whilst he is pulling on the rope.

The DM's argument is that it is similar to moving a heavy object which does provoke an AoO

The players argument is that he can focus on the spider and still move his feet even though he is pulling on the rope.

What do you folks think?

10-21-05, 07:55 AM I would say that the spider gets an AoO because, even though the target can see the spider and move his feet, he's not able to fully dodge and weave and jump out of the way. He can't bring up his weapons or shield to parry and can't even lift his arms to block. He's just able to move a bit. So I'd say the AoO would happen.

10-21-05, 07:55 AM I believe that the AoO should stand because although the barbarian can see the phase spiders and move to dodge, the rope is tied off in one position. This would limit his movement and if he is a comrade of the rogues he will be checking to make sure no enemies sneak up on him when he's prone against the wall. The dm is spot on when comparing it too moving a heavy object because unless the barbarian has a massive strangth score he will be putting a lot of effort into hauling the rogue back up.

Thanks for the feedback, i have to say i agree with the DM and you guys on this one, the barbarian had a strengh of about 24 at the time and even though the rogue is light and not heavily armoured, it is still a dead weight at the end of the rope and his movement is still limited due to the rope he is pulling up.
