Mintper's Chapbook (check out the link above) suggests that the Ba'etith might not have been hiding away the Nether Scrolls, so much as dispersing them around ancient ruins where worthy adventurers and seekers would be likely to find them.

This is not unlike what Elminster does. If so, there might have been operatives of Mystryl as far back as the time of the Creator Races spreading knowledge of magic around with the intent of deepening people's understanding of the Art and connection to the Weave.

You know who else is known for hiding away secrets in difficult places for worthy seekers to find? Parrafaire, the Naga Prince. Who happens to be a fragment of the World Serpent and had ties to the Sarrukh and the Nagas.

The funny thing about a weave is that many threads are woven together in the making of it...

09-15-05, 08:38 AM I don't think it was the Ba'etith who reutrned the scrolls to these locations, but some other power. One that understood that they were to powerful to all be kept in one place. Whether this was the Harpers, Chosen of Mystra, or some divinity, I don't know.
I wonder how large the Ba'etith organization was. A score of wizards or a hundred. It must not have lasted long after the scrolls were created, or it would have had it's ranks swollen by 50th level casters from reading the scrolls. One would think anyone beside Mystryl herself would have been hard pressed to desrtoy a group of twenty or more 50th level casters.
I think the group had to have been destroyed sometime after creating the scrolls, but before testing them. It would explain their disappearance and how the two sets of scrolls were found together in one location. Maybe the test subject upon gaining this vast magical power turned on the group and destroyed it. But still, why leave these two complete sets around?

09-15-05, 07:51 PM In my Realms the Nether Scrolls do not give a level per scroll read, so the Ba'etith are never going to be a 'bunch of 50th level spellcasters'.

09-15-05, 09:25 PM I know there is some debate about the true power of the scrolls as far as the level benefits it gives. But whether it is 5, 10, or 50 levels of arcane spellcaster, why leave two sets of scrolls behind. It had to be some sudden event. And they must have had a tremendous amount of arcane lore. Access to spells that would rival the libraries of any modern arcane school. Why are the libraries gone, but the scrolls were left behind.
