My friends are really big BG fans and I vaguely remember something like this before the switchover to v.3 No there really isn't. There's 3 novels based on those events and then a few Dragon articles that also tie in with those novels. However, you might be thinking of Ed's Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II sourcebook which was also made to tie in with those puter games.
