| Sir Elton05-19-06, 08:59 AM | I don't normally post on the Forgotten Realms forum. But I have a question for those DMs/GMs who have completed the game Baldur's Gate II. I'm wondering if any of you have added your BG II character to the roster of Deities after he or she ascended? I did this, actually. My Bhalspawn is usually a Lawful Good Wizard who ascends as a god of the Realms. Being the Son of Bhal (which is part of his nature), my Lawful Good Wizard became somewhat a God of Magical Justice (actually, I don't know what sort of Portfolio he'd get yet, but he's an LG wizard, so . . . ). One of my players assumed that he'd be a God of Naturalness. I laughed and I said: No, he is Lawful Good. If he were Neutral Good (Hard Enough to encourage compliance to the natural order, but easy enough to allow individual freedoms) then maybe so. But I'd like to see who had added their BG II:SoA and ToB character to the FR Deity Roster. |

| MasterGrazzt05-20-06, 08:58 PM | A Mary Sue is a character an author creates to serve as a sort of waldo into the fictional world of his stories. In other words, if I were to create a character that is basically myself and insert it into my story to interact with the characters and be perfect and flawless, that would be a Mary Sue. |

In that case, it depends on how active and meddlesome the Gods are in your campaign, Brian. Apparently, in FR, they aren't that active at all. Just meddlesome. If you run FR with very active deities, then yes, it can seem like a Mary Sue. If not, well then you don't have to worry about the PCs running into them. |
| Tergiver05-20-06, 11:12 PM | I'm running a game that started just after the events in BG2, but I didn't add the PC to the pantheon. I decided that the protagonist realized the only way to permanently kill Bhaal was to destroy himself and wipe things like his name out of people's minds. So the destruction was done, Bhaal was dead, there were other aftereffects, but no new gods. I don't know how much of that was wanting to stay within shouting distance of FR canon, how much was avoiding Mary Sue, and how much was the idea of having a god named "Biff Monkeytorturer"... |
| TheCobra05-22-06, 07:59 PM | NPCs sometimes refer to the events of the BG series in my campaign, but the Bhaalspawn chose to reject divinity. Maybe I should have them encounter Minsc or something, though. That would be pretty cool. |
| MasterGrazzt05-22-06, 08:20 PM | I have come to hate Minsc so much. All these kids posting "HAHA SOWRDS NOT WORDZ" on forums... uggghtthht. I'd much rather use Edwin or Korgan. |

Minsc has become a bit of a oft quoted guy in my group. occasionally we'll get a "go for the eyes boo! go for the eyes!" quoted dureing a fight. the funny thing is it's developed into a bit of a catch phrase and we have people making the quote who have never even PLAYED the game. |

I don't know how much of that was wanting to stay within shouting distance of FR canon, how much was avoiding Mary Sue, and how much was the idea of having a god named "Biff Monkeytorturer"...Well remember, the BG novels are official material. The CRPGs are not. Additionally, The novels are canon. WotC lists them as taking place in 1368 DR and 1369 DR. As well, the characters from the novels were stat’d up in DRAGON #262 for 2e and there is the Bhaalspawn template for 3e in DRAGON #288. Ed wrote a sourcebook that complements the novels -- Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II. In addition, Jim Butler answered this question in 2000 on the FR Mailing List. There's also some tidbits Lost Empires of Faerun. And finally, the author of the last novel chimed in on the topic - "<Ulairi> <Howdy> Are the BG games considered canon Forgotten Realms history by WotC? <Drew2_Bio> Because of our multiple endings, the BG games can't be considered "official" in the FR world. However, the novels (including the upcoming TOB novel - another free plug for me!) are considered canon." -- Rich Baker, Ed Greenwood and Ed Bonny have all confirmed this as well. |
| Ezell Pike05-23-06, 08:57 AM | I haven't, but i have used old PC's from other players. And on a side note when the game says you can't beat it with just one character it's lying. |
