Bardic Dispute [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-01-05, 01:25 PM The group I am in at the moment has been running for about a year and a half - It consists of a Dwarven Ranger/Barbarian with a awakened Brown Bear for a Animal Companion, a Human Fighter, Sun Elf Sorcerer (DM's character), and Moon Elf Bard (me). We are all lv8 close to lv9, from about lv6 until now the Dwarf and Human have been complaining that I use/play my Banjolele too much, I use it to attract Fey, Entertain for money (as our DM is very tight with treasure), highten a gloomy time, and to up everyone's stats in combat... I have already said to both the Dwarf and Human "This Banjolele is like my weapon, I don't try and stop you using your Axe and Sword, so what gives you the right to try and stop me using my weapon?"... They took no notice and carried on trying to destroy it ect!
Any idea what I can do, thanks in advance.

01-01-05, 02:32 PM Use a Shatter spell on their weapons, assuming they are not magical. If they are magical, use Charm or Suggestion spells to convince them to let you "borrow" them, while you head to town to "use your magic to make them more powerful". Then go sell them at the local town for money to buy a new instrument, plus some nice magic items. When the Charm spells wear off, I suggest you use Extended Alter Self spells combined with your access to the Disguise skill to escape. None of the other players will have access to True Seeing, so they wont be able to find you out.

Oh yeah, finding another playing group would also be helpful, since your fellow players sound like they need to be smacked with a giant d20, and are likely to kill you after this happens. The DM should allow you some degree of revenge though, since they ruined your instrument.

01-01-05, 03:45 PM I like the idea about selling on their weapons as a Dwarf without his Axe and a Fighter without his Bastard-sword are useless, as they have no money or other items apart from armour - as I am the main source of the income due to my performing... I am also the party's healer so I don't think they realise how much they loose if I leave, but leaving the group isn't such a good idea, as we are the only teen dungeons and dragons group for miles, and I cannot get transport that easily! Another point is that the DM's character is on my side on this dispute and he has access to our offensive spells (fireball ect) so two spell casters against two combatants with no weapons will work a treat.
But will this change my alignment in anyway?

Absolutely not. The dwarf and human PCs are being jerks about this (and their players are, as well...) And in any case, Bard characters are non-Lawful, so I'd say you have nothing to worry about as far as alignment goes.

If so, without instrument you are unable to cast spells, so no healing for your party.
At least that’s the way I rule bards.

From the SRD:
Every bard spell has a verbal component (singing, reciting, or music).

So, depending on what you have Skill perform (X) ranks in, you would be unable to cast any spells

~ Ways of getting money.
~ Ways of convincing guards to let us through.
~ Ways of healing.
~ Ways of opening locked doors without smashing it down.

I don't actually sing as a player if thats what you mean... Or were you just trying to insult Bards? :rolleyes:

01-02-05, 10:01 AM Personally, I don't like bards. I think they only have slightly more use than rogues. But that doesn't mean that I think they should be killed, or that no one else should play them, etc.

Wizard all the way for me, baby. Preferrably specialist wizard.

I agree with you GothicDan, I don't like Rangers much, but I still don't mind them being a PC.

If they really have a problem with your bard work up something a little devious with your DM.
If you are the party healer, etc. then try something like a cold. Your bard gets a cold and can't sing for a while so no healing, no extra income, no buffing and then see if the dwarf and the fighter can do it alone for a while. It may not work but it is a way to keep your bard in the game and yet show those two that you do help out.
If they do succeed in breaking your instrument then any revenge you take is perfectly in keeping with a choatic alignment. As long as you don't hurt them personally, I would say just about anything would go.

I was wondering, is there any spell i could cast on my Banjolele so when they do destroy it they are harmed - in that way I doubt my alignment will change and I also doubt that they will catch on to it being cast just for them (as they arn't too smart :rolleyes: ) - any idea??

Just had the game, we are lv9 now and I have a few more magic items.
I have got it through to the Dwarf that myself and my Banjolele are after all useful. The way I did this is getting his Longbow back off of a creature using my abilities hide(+29) move silently (+19) and Perform (+21).
Now all I got to do is get it through to the fighter! :rolleyes:
