Yes they are currently on the moon.:P

-Errmm...Yes. Ed Greenwood used to get visited by Elminster. They talked, and this is the reason why we know so much about the Realms. Ed Greenwood wrote down everything that Elminster told him, and had it published via WotC...

(And, you weren't being serious, correct?)

So that is why Elminster is so powerful and invincible, if I was Ed Greenwood I wouldn't trust everything this old gray bearded friend from other dimension is talking.

Are the Forgotten Realms real?

Define "Real".

From a old Cosmological point of view (before those in Cosmology tried to pass itself as a "real" Science with it's Big Bang theory and Dark matter theoory) there are many Universes forming what is known as the Multiverse and there are other planes of existence which include Outter Planes, Inner planes, the Astral Plane, and many many Prime Material Planes (does any of this sound familiar?)

In any case all the dimesions and a lot of the planes touch each other and in some cases can be seen or visited in dreams (including daydreaming) as appose to the standard "Dreamscape" that most minds drift to when asleep (again, any of this sond familiar?)

I mean, I just woke up from a Dream where I was spending a week on this very nice and relaxing Island with my family including my Mom and my Dad and on the last day before I had to "come home" to work I was trying to decide if I was going to "Fly" home or call and quit and stay on that Island....the beautiful coastline and the crashing of the waves on the sand and being with my family was making it hard to want to "come back" ......which is cool because my Mom is laid up in the Hospital recovering from a Cancer operation and my Dad has been dead for 6 years(oh, and I wasn't breathing when I first gained conciousness once I decided I needed to "come back")

Well, Baator is based on the nine levels of Hell theorized by Dante. Many of the cultures are reflected somewhere on Earth. Karsus (The Lord) has noted many Jewish influences, and that's only part of what we've discovered on these boards.

That's not exactly old. The theory about an infinite number of alternate universes still exists.

They could be real...

right?

Long ago ran the sun on a folk who had a dream
And the heart and the will and the power:
They moved the earth; they carved the stone; moulded hill and channeled stream
That we might stand on the wide plains of Wiltshire

Now men asked who they were, how they built and wonder why
That they wrought standing stones of such size
What was done 'neath our shade? What was pray'ed 'neath our skies
As we stood on the wyrd plains of Wiltshire

Oh what secrets we could tell if you'd listen and be still
Rid the stink and the noise from our skirts
But you haven't got the clue and perhaps you never will
Mute we stand on the cold plains of Wiltshire

Still we loom in the mists as the ages roll away
And we say of our folk, "they are here!"
That they built us and they died and you'll not be knowing why
Save we stand on the bare plains of Wiltshire

lol

yeah the reason that people get the inspiration for their ideas about them is really because their brains are tuned into the cosmic reverberations of the peoples actions in faerun.

so they are not making them up but merely remembering the actions of the people in the other place.

They could be real...

right?

Well since noone else seems to be doing so, I'll take the initial step in the direction that she might be asking in earnest.

The answer is yes, despite what others would have you believe.

The chances of this situation actually occurring however vary, and the chance that Ed himself actually made contact with one of Faeruns occupants is even more unlikely.

However, the possibility remains provided you are of the mind to believe that there are an infinite number of other worlds within our universe that sport life as complex and as intelligent-- Please note that I find most humans boorishly unintelligent, so being smarter is not necessarily a difficult thing-- as ours AND believe in the likelihood of infinite multiple realities for each.

If you can say yes to the latter, then the likelihood of the former is near definite.
Voric

07-30-07, 09:13 AM
By the definition of infinity, in a truly limitless universe, every possibility, no matter how unlikely, not only can exist, but must exist somewhere at some point in time.

But this argument only holds true if you cleave to the idea of a truly infinite existence.

Personally, I advise you to seek help.

Even though I found myself thinking the same way with you Red_Wizard, i decided to take a further step and ask her of her age instead of giving her the 'alternate universe' answer for a single reason;
That she is probably wondering if Faerun exists or could exist 'here'. In our dimension.
So... this is actually an effort to figure out weather she's so young or so teasy (or so blond ?:D ) as to have asked such a thing.
Maybe she's LHAO with all 'us' now discussing about it...

From a purely scientific point of view, the very idea of "proving" something with "evidence" is considered entirely out of date and a bit silly. It's more like: postulating a view of reality that helps to explain it in a way that we can at least try to verify via prediction. At least, that's how physics goes about it. :)

No,no,no.

The proper succession is:

1) Is the Keyboard real, are you really sitting there, and are you real?

2) Is where you are real, and is that really air you are breathing?

3) Do you want to take the Blue Pill or the Red pill that just appeared near your computer ? (This opportunity goes to every reading this post)

So what? I'm no physicist. You know very well that I meant. The realms do exist, simply not in physical form as landmasses on this particular planet. It does exist or none of us could talk about it. Maybe the realms do exist in that was somewhere else in the universe, but as far as I'm concerned it is simply a setting for a game that exists in imagination and on paper as a fictional world.

Far be it from me to make any sort of absolute, but there are some genuinely convincing means to which one could prove the Forgotten Realms are (or at one point) were real.

The way I see it, there are two points of view here ->

1. Since "reality" is based on perception (and this has been brought up by multiple people, from that butterfly guy, to Morpheus from the Matrix) and the Forgotten Realms is already laden with much lore and a host of detailed characters - it could very well be something that exists, and through not only the enlightenment of the novels, but the RPG as well (that we have all taken a part of at some point) some people have experienced the Realms up close. The Forgotten Realms are real. Tangible as anything else, but recognized only by a few for what it truly is.

2. There are many possible realities co-existing with ours at the moment. At one point in Earth's history, we overlapped with the reality where the Realms *did* exist, and that is how the slaves were taken, that is how Elminster, for a time, was able to travel here so easily. Perhaps the reason we don't hear as much lore from the authors, or Mr. Greenwood is that Elminster's methods of crossing over to our world have become strained as that "bleeding of realities" no longer exists? It should be noted that events in our lives still occur which can't be explained by science, which are remnants of the magic that once was a part of Earth.

Why all the ridicule, though? I was under the impression most role-players are open minded individuals. The chances of the Realms being real are very good.

If that's the logic you use to live your life, and it makes you happy, more power to you. I'm glad that the rest of reality doesn't function on such premises. (That's not meant to be insulting at all; there's just a huge gulf in your opinion of ideas like 'logic, 'chance,' etc. and those of modern western science's.) Basing philosophy almost entirely on pop media (I HATE the Matrix) isn't a very deep way of living life.
Ezram

08-01-07, 08:02 PM
I'm glad that the rest of reality doesn't function on such premises.

I wonder why that is

I also don't see the point in using one area of science to explain this -> "western" in particular, as this phenomenon bridges all realities, and certainly no point on our planet is unique in this regard.

Basing philosophy almost entirely on pop media (I HATE the Matrix) isn't a very deep way of living life.

And I don't. There are other philosophers and people of all walks of life that support this idea. However, The Matrix is one of the most easily and readily identifiable examples I chose in this instance to relate my belief to others.

I also don't see the point in using one area of science to explain this -> "western" in particular, as this phenomenon bridges all realities, and certainly no point on our planet is unique in this regard.

Because we are talking on a message board that is distinctly "Western" in nature - that is, it officially uses the English language as its method of communication.

And I don't. There are other philosophers and people of all walks of life that support this idea. However, The Matrix is one of the most easily and readily identifiable examples I chose in this instance to relate my belief to others.

I think it was a really poor method of doing so. There are any of a number of other more credible and in-depth philosophical ideals or philosophers you could have referenced.

Mind you, I didn't come into this discussion throwing ridicule, like some others. I still fully stand by my original statement of intent as far as "proving" whether something exists or not.

Philosophers have been ridiculing others for thousands of years. It helps to make sure others truly examine what they're presenting and analyze it as deeply as possible to avoid further possible rebuke by peers.

I for one don't think that Ed Greenwood learned of the realms from Elminster. I think he created the realms and Elminster. Also what does the Matrix have at all to do with reality? It was a movie. I for one, am not someone who bases my beliefs on something like that. Besides, have you ever heard of fiction? Magic real? travel between a fictional world and this world?
Ezram

08-01-07, 10:01 PM
travel between a fictional world and this world?

The debate is whether it is fictional or not. That hasn't been concluded as of yet.
GothicDan

08-01-07, 10:06 PM
It's impossible to objectively conclude. All we can do is look at the data and figure out which reality seems the most likely, and conduct our lives 'as if' it's true.

Well, that's what I do. Just call me Slartibartfast.

Although the fact that Ed has never given any indication that such things are true, and that he's given us pretty specific inspirations on how HE CREATED the world, is a good indication that it's not 'real,' as far as I'm concerned.
Dimensional_Drifter

08-01-07, 10:13 PM
Fine then. I have something we all can agree upon, or so I hope. We all have our own opinions. Also any or all of us can be right to some degree or another. I guess some of my logic is shallow, simpleminded and outdated.

Science itself is just today's way of explaining unknowns - what used to be called magic. What you do is magic Dan, to someone from the 14th century. Someone looking back at your work from the 24th century might consider your data laughable, and mere 'primitive voodoo'.

Science is not absolute, it's just todays way of explaining what we might see tomorrow - and its wrong at least half the time. :P

MarkusTay63

08-01-07, 11:10 PM
I'm going back a few posts, about the validity of science over philosophy.

I just feel that science is simply dogma with better math. You can prove just about aything if you keep juggling the equations long enough. I've seen too many examples of scientists trying different approaches until one works - that doesn't neccessarily make it correct. It reminds me of a REALLY hard puzzle I did once, where there were only four different shapes to the 1000 some-odd pieces. Plenty of them fit, but only one would make the pretty picture.

And there's no way anyone is going to ever have all the pieces to the big puzzle, which means nothing is constant and anything is possible.

Sorry, I'm just waxing philosophical this week, making me an enemy of the establishment. :dancin:
GothicDan

08-01-07, 11:13 PM
You seemed like you were trying to disagree with something I said. :)

My beliefs about science pretty much evolved from my first physics teacher's statement, "Physics is predicting the future." That sums it up, for me.

And... I consider Science to merely be a refined extension of Philosophy - specifically, natural philosophy. I love the pre-Socratic Greek philosophers.
Dimensional_Drifter

08-01-07, 11:17 PM
Yeah, but Plane-touched are cool, so you still partially win.

Not to say this discussion about what science is doesn't interest me, but I think I'll stop posting on this thread for a bit, it seems to be leaning further and further off topic. But if you are debating science over philosophy and one says that science is an extension of philosophy, by all means continue to post on the topic. If you can, try to fit something regarding to the realms into the discussion.

Well, we all know that the magic of the Realms is just an extension of its Science, right? ;)

Also what does the Matrix have at all to do with reality? It was a movie. I for one, am not someone who bases my beliefs on something like that.

-The Matrix is a...I can't think of a batter word- a characture of an argument that Renee Descartes made in his Meditations. The argument that Descartes was making was that since it is possible for our perceptions to decieve us at certain times (insanity, high fever, and so on), how do we know that our entire existence as we know it, through our perceptions, isn't just a lie? Descattes eventually came to (in his mind) prove that our existences aren't just misperceptions. I'll let you go read up to Descartes, to see just how he did it. While I agree with the basic premise of this argument, I don't particularly buy into his solution to it.

So I partially won the debate? I guess I should be thankful. I thought you didn't rest until your opinion was the correct one, and everyone else lost.

The debate is whether it is fictional or not. That hasn't been concluded as of yet.

So either the premise behind the Neverending Story is true, or Ed Greenwood is hiding a huge secret? =)

If one were to be true (like a White Castle radio commercial), I'd pick the later.

Beyond that fun game, as a Westerner I'd need to be shown proof. =)

Well, it's not something you can entirely prove. It requires a degree of faith along with the reasoning.

Wow. Faith. I hate faith. :)

Am I the only one here that thinks that the thin barrier between openmindedness and well...PARANOIA, is crossed ??
Ezram, What are your hypothesis based on, girl ??
Seriously...

I'm pretty sure that not you nor anyone here is dillusional, yet, not 'only' you tend to present a completely illogical and unpvroved scenario of a universe where 'Elminster' lives... you make it as almost a FACT...
And Elves and Dwarfs TOO ?...

Sure the universe has plenty of space for everything, but COME ON....our table and paper 'game world' for god's sake ?
'Then' what's next, the SMURFS ?
...
No offence,
I'm not Deina Scully-ish, usually more like Fox Mulder-ish, I have an 'I believe' poster with a UFO in my room and a 'Caution Area 51' on my door...
yet this whole 'real forgotten realms' concept sounds too much !

I guess I need to stop arbitrarily making judgements on things. I didn't connect the Matrix with Descartes in any way... Should I feel stupid for not realizing that?

However, Ezram: how can faith and reasoning actually coexist and still work together without contradiction?

-No, not really. I can guarantee that the majority of people who saw The Matrix aren't aware of the connections, either. ;)

-As long as there isn't enough concrete evidence to conclusivley point to one direction or another, it works. In cases like that, they compliment each other.

The Matrix is also pretty reminiscent of Neuromancer and any of a number of Star Trek/Dr. Who-esque plots, with a dash of mutilated Hindu or Existential potpourri thrown in.

yeah the reason that people get the inspiration for their ideas about them is really because their brains are tuned into the cosmic reverberations of the peoples actions in faerun.

so they are not making them up but merely remembering the actions of the people in the other place.

incidentally there is also a portal to faerun behind the bin at the back of our chippy.:D

What is a chippy?
