I just finished reading the Return of the Archwizards series and have a question about the beholder and illithid population in FR. There seemed to be a helluva lot of both races killed in the series and I'm left wondering first, where did they all come from and second, are there any left on or under Faerun? It appears that both races should now be considered very rare in the Silver Marches, Anauroch and the Western Heartlands.

The way I see it there were never really that many mind flayers or beholders in faerun in the first place. If you read around, you'd find out that beholders arrived in faerun with couple spell jamming vessels, while the Mind Flayers were escaping the destruction of their homeworld Glyth... Now from what I have read there are several cities of both Mind Flayers and beholders in the underdark (from what I read there are about 10 k mind flayers spread out all throughout the underdark) while there are around 4-5 k of beholders... I got this from Drizzt's guide to the underdark and a bit of imagination (time passed populations grew a little even though a lot were killed). But the general consensus is that both of these races are far from common. So to answer your question in a few words, yes they are rare, yes they have cities, look at drizzt's guide to the underdark if you want to know what cities and other underdark sourcebooks.

)Hi just wanted you to know that I believe Aris says in the Summoning that the Beholders that destroyed his village had been from a Beholder city that recently fell to the Phauriem, however spelled... I would surmise that the mind control or domination of the Pha. is quite considerable to overpower the ithillids. Anywho

since mindflayer originate from a different plane (the astral), itīs up to the DM how much of them live on/under faerun. however, there are more than one illithid cities down below. according to drizzt doīurdenīs guide to the underdark:

ChīChitl:
"the kingdom below lies deep beneath the southernmost foothills of the sword mountains. ..." (p.43)

Oryndoll:
"Oryndoll is a city of illithids miles beneath the shining Plains west of the vilhorn reach. in relation to surface landmarks, Oryndoll is set some ninety miles northwest of Ormath and ninety miles northeast of Lheshayl. ..."(p.74)
population: ca. 5600 illithids, 400 ulitharids, 1 elder brain (and ca. 20000 dominated slaves).

beholders also have at least 2 cities beneath faerun:

Ooltul (phaerimm/beholder):
"Ooltul lies deep under the anauroch, thirty miles due west of the dītarig village of tel badir ..." (p.69)

Zokir:
"Zokir is located under the alimir mountains of eastern calimshan, beneath the echoing canyons of kush. ..." (p.122)
population: more than 2400 true beholder.

as long as those cities exist, it should be save to assume that at least enough beholder and mindflayer emerge to the surface to harass the pc from time to time. :)
