Anyone else using this book for your FR game?

11-14-03, 08:07 PM I'm this )( close to buying the book, but I'm not sure what I'd use from it in my games. I don't really like the idea of angels in my campaign. I don't want my players thinking the gods give a darn about what they're doing.

11-14-03, 08:24 PM I'd probably use parts of it (the same I do for almost any d20 book), I'd probably use the true names, and some other parts of it.

Just because the book features them, doesn't mean you have to use them. ;) Most of the book is about really good paladin-type characters, not celestial beings. If your characters aspire to be as such, then this is a good, useful book.

11-18-03, 09:17 AM There's a lot of useful stuff in the book even if you are against using angels in your campaign. The first chapters on the nature and aspects of good are well written and comprehensive in coverage. The artifacts of good and spells are also very handy, specially if the Book of Vile Darkness is going to be used in your campaign.

The chapters on paragons of good and creatures on the other hand are mainly focused on The Great Wheel and you are right that the Player's Guide to Faerūn seems likely to clarify it further they apply to Toril.

11-18-03, 11:27 AM This book has a lot of neat stuff for an FR campaign. Because FR is less celestial-dominated (and has many more deities) I'd be inclined to attach most of the celestial-follower classes to deities.

Of particular note in classes that made me wonder if the designers had written them for FR deities in their spare time and decided to de-FRize them and include them in BoED:

Vow of Nonviolence/Vow of Peace/Apostle of Peace goes great for Eldathyn

The beloved of Valarian is perfect for a follower of Lurue. (Renamed Beloved of Lurue)

Vow of Poverty/Stigmata feats are excellent for Ilmatari

Stalker of Kharash is essentially custom-made for Gwaeron Windstrom.

Champion of Gwynharwyf is absolutely perfect for Uthgar of the Black Lion or Great Worm tribes.

Lion of Talsid is practically custom-made for Nobanion.

Troubador of Stars is superb for Milil.

Skylord, of course, refers to the Eagle Riders of Evermeet :)

Other classes and how they fit:
A Defender of Sealtiel could be excellent for an LG helmite.

Exalted Arcanist could work great for mystran sorcerors or milil's bards.

Fist of Raziel works as Fist of Torm.

There's several candidates for Initiate of Pistis Sophia, from Mulhorandi monks to Ilmatari. Disciples of the Phoenix is the best fit (for the behavior taboos) But Yellow Rose works just as well, and Sun Soul, Broken Ones, or Hin Fist might be decent fits.

Prophet of Erathaol is a possibility for LG Savrans.

Sentinel of Bharrai is perfect for Rillifane in his aspect as Magnar for wild elves.

Slayer of Domiel . . . this is a really hard fit. Tyr or Hoar maybe -- the Harpers really serve this function, but they're CG.

Swanmay is a great fit for Shiallia.

I'm thinking you'll see a lot more ease of interchangeability within the FR and Core dnd. With the Draconomicon and now the BoED, more and more the direction seems to be going to Forgotten Realms it seems.

Of course I could be imagining things, wishful thinking etc...
