Okay, say you have a PC you played, that is from current times but was sent back to Netheril. Say this person, while there began to gain interest in the god Amaunator the ancient god of bureaucracy, law, order, contracts, the sun, and rulership.

What if she came back a believer and a worshiper of Amaunator. He lays adrift in the astral plane for when the cities of Netheril fell due to Karus' folly, all his worshipers died. Would she be enough to bring him from the astral plane? Or would she have to gain other followers? If I"m not mistaken, no one has those specific portfolios. Lathander is of dawn, not the sun....Tyr is justice, but not law...and so on. What would it take for her to bring Amaunator back?

Any help would be great.

Well the problem with this is that in 3E, Amaunator is now Lathander. He some how reincarnated into Lathander. (It conflicts with the old material I know, but according to Faiths and Pantheons, that is the case. Lathander is Amaunator).

However, if you want to ignore that, like many of us do/did, then he could be brought back if he had follower(s) again and AO allowed it......

Um no. Not talking about a novel here. It is in 1 of the 3e sourcebooks and Eric Boyd (Who wrote that part has even said as much. IN 3e Lathander IS Amauntor).

And my fault it was in Races of Faerun where it is written that he is Lathander. Page 106 under Human, Bedine, "Amauntor, a dead Netherese deity reborn as Lathander."

Page 107, under Human, Netherese, "Amaunator (Lathander), Jannath (Chauntea), etc etc."

See also this thread on the old boards.

If that is not enough for you, here's the quote from a different thread on the old boards.

Hey all,

Thanks for the feedback on Races of Faerun, good and bad.

For the poster who asked about Lathander/Amaunator ... I was well aware of the change I was making. I actually had the idea that Lathander and Amaunator were different aspects of the same god back when we were writing Faiths & Avatars. We decided not to be explicit about it back then, but we did try to leave room for that interpretation. With the advent of 3e and FRCS, there was some consolidation of FR deities. I personally would not have done that, but I understand why it was done. Anyhow, when it came time to write Faiths & Pantheons, Amanautor was no longer listed, and I couldn't really justify the space to reintroduce a long dead god. I figured the best way to refine the continuity between editions was to go back to the original idea (which is compatible with the original write-ups) and make them explicitly two aspects of the same god.

Regardless, if you don't like the idea, don't use it. I highly doubt Wizards will ever take the idea any farther.

For what it's worth, here's the (unpublished) full conception of the idea: Lathander/Amaunator/some unnamed deity are three aspects/phases/faces of a tripartite deity. There's the dawn aspect, the "high sun" aspect, and the dusk aspect, and a constant cycling among the 3.

In other words, after Netheril died, Amanator actually transformed into a dying god of dusk (name unknown). Prior to the Dawn Cataclysm, that god was reborn as Lathander, god of dawn. (The portfolio of dusk was then claimed by Myrkul.)

In terms of the future history of the Realms, this would imply that Lathander's church would slowly evolve into a rigid, LN, time-obsessed church (like the church of Amaunator at its height). There may already be signs of that evolution if you look closely today. (This could be a campaign seed for a lot of strife within the church of Lathander. Another campaign seed would be a Lathanderite quest to recover lost artifacts of Amaunator, without tipping their hand as to why they are interested.)

Which is what I said in my first reply. :). But officially in 3E he has been reincarnated as Lathander, unless like some of us do/did you keep the old info which does not conflict with the 3e info.

I was going to say....

Because is says nothing of the kind in Faiths and Avatars, neither second nor third edition...

I don't happen to have the races of Faerun, but why would it be in there and not F&A?

Strange, no?

And why does he not have the portfolios of law, contracts...etc. Did they just disappear?

I think that this guy feels as if he has the right to ruin a deity(er..even if he ..um..did write a lot of stuff). Lathander is too cheery and bright to turn into a staunchy old god like that. The idea is just ludicrous.

Anyways....I don't intend to EVER change Lathander...he's awesome.

Well it wouldn't be in Faith's and Avatars, since that is a 2e book. And it wasn't changed until 3E. I know Eric Boyd gave a reason why it was printed in Races of Faerun instead of 3e's Faiths and Pantheons, but I don't remember the reason.

But you are right, many of us keep the old info and say Amauntor is still a dead god who is floating on the Astral Plane, since there are a lot of holes in the theory that he has been reincarnated as Lathander.

 That's okay. Blame it on WOTC for using names that are to close together from the old books. :). HAHA. Kidding.

The thing is, 2nd edition was "Faiths and Avatars" and "Powers and Pantheons" ugh

so they combined them!

Which can be a little..confusing.

Actually I was curious about that comment also, since I don't recall it ever being written in a novel and only being written in a 3E sourcebook.
