I created this thread as a general sounding board (and for those who wish to live vicariously) and advice column for my current campaign in FR (Cormyr and surrounding area specifically)

Currently the players (Skylar NG 1/2 elf Ftr3/Wiz2; Eberk CN Dwarf Rog5; Alexander LG Human Mnk 5; Sara LG Human Ftr5; Karok CG 1/2 elf Rgr5) have been contacted by a liutenant in the Purple Dragons. He has told them about recent divinations fortelling "Doom from within Cormyr for the Crown." Since he officially can do nothing his superiors tell him to do, he has asked a favor from our adventurers to find out what they can and help however they can. Being a mostly goodly group, they accept and break into a suspected Noble's house. Turns out the nobles they broke into (the Ingkara's) were being framed and had been kidnapped by wererats. After nearly dying and tracing the wererats back to another, rival Noble house (the Bolns) they get hired by the Ingkara family to bring back the Boln's to justice and for whatever the Ingkaras also wish (though the players don't know this yet). They traced the Boln family to the Stonelands where, working with the Zhentarim, they have either bribed, coerced, or bullied the myriad monstrous humanoid tribes into submission or at least quiet. This was to make it look like House Boln has tamed the Stonelands and would receive the barony from the crown that taming the stonelands would earn. In return for their help, the Zhentarim would get sole trading rights in the land (Not a good neighbor for Cormyr to have). Our heroes have stormed the camp of House Boln, captured Jerlial and Oria Boln (Matron and Patron) and are headed back to Cormyr with the chests of gold the Bolns were using to bribe the tribes. What they don't know is coming is the tribes, expecting more money and finding no Bolns to give it to them, start to rampage and the Zhentarim move for revenge.

Just wondering, what period is this game set in. Specifically has Azoun kicked the bucket yet? I only ask because Cormyr has been through a lot since then, its almost a different country.

This is set in first month of 1373, snow on the ground, and the Lieutenant was specifically worried about little 1 year old King Azoun V, because Princess Alusair continues to carry him around with (seemingly) little regard for his safety and the future of Cormyr.

First quandary, how many gnolls and at what levels should a group of this size and experience take on?

Gnolls are CR 1 creatures and at the levels that your characters are, they'll carve through such challenges, even 4 ought to be pretty easy.
Your party consists of 5 5th lvel characters and should thus be facing a 6 CR challenge I think, on average.
Hmm, 6 CR in gnolls.
5th level Gnoll Ranger/Barbarian/Fighter or any combination thereof.
3rd level Gnoll R/B/F with Troll or scrag
4th level Gnoll R/B/F with ankheg or dire wolf or grick or ogre or werewolf or zombie ogre

Hey take your pick, I'm sure any one of these beasties exists in the stonelands.
Nasty, nasty place.

Some very cool ideas here. If you wanted to challenge your party you could also give regular Gnolls a boost in stats and equipment, and have a large group of them rush the players. If you're worried about the Gnolls outflanking the characters, have some stay at range and use shortbows, while the others rush the PCs in small groups.

I think an ogre and a gnoll ranger would be very tough, especially if he has elves as a favored enemy. My persoanl favorite is 2 1st fighter gnolls and some 1st level goblin rogues with spears.. Give the gnolls flails and improved disarm and watch the it turn into a bum fight. Do the PCs kill the gnolls first or do they go after the goblins? Either way it would be fun.

I went with Gnolls War3 (5), and a Gnoll Druid5. With the Gnoll's beefed up wolverine animal companion.
Druid beefed up the wolverine with Bear's strength, Endurance, and Magic Fang, and summoned another wolverine, then went at them with her Shillelagh club.

The gnoll warriors that fought with a wolverine aided in attack the wolverine as did the warriors that fought with the druid, the others just fought blindly (as stupid, eager hunters would.

It was a tough fight. They lost 2 horses and one of the Bolns they were escorting escaped (and was subsequently recaptured).

Next up, they run into a barricade. The Red Raven mercenary group has been hired to protect the northern border from the rampaging humanoids who are no longer being paid by house Boln. Will our heroes continue on to Suzail to prosecute the Bolns, or will they stay and fight the humanoids?

Like the good little boy (and girl) scouts they are, they all decided to stay and fight with the red ravens. Their mission was to take out the leaders. Not easy. With a little help they managed to take down the instigating Ogre Mage and her fiendish Troll helper.

But it wouldn't be a good Cormyrian story without a little treachery. Oria Boln managed to charm a sympathetic young Rowanmantle knight into untying them. One dead rowanmantle and two missing horses later we find tracks leading to Sembia, what next?

Well, before our heroes have a chance to dash off after the Bolns, the Captain of the Red Ravens tells them to let them go "It's a wild land, they won't make it out alive" and the party lasts until breakfast. And while sleeping off the party every one of our heroes has an interesting dream of a shadowy figure that seems to have some information, but they can't quite make out what it is. All they know is that he is holding the royal crown of Cormyr, then it floats away, and our heroes are chasing after it...

They still make it back to Suzail and present their story and evidence as well as the testimony of the Ingkarans to Caladnei and the Bolns are officially disbanded as Cormyrian royalty. Then our heroes get paid by the Ingkarans for their services, and are now headed east, to check up on a lead in Marsember about the fleeing Bolns, as well as picking up a more powerful animal companion for the Ranger. Everybody levels.
