| Elven squirrel11-20-03, 08:54 PM | i am working on a campian that involves the PC's going to a "new world" semi-like cristaphor culumbus (i think that is how you spell it). the PCs will hitch a ride on an exploration ship and head for a newly found island. this island was not inhabited before hand because it is heavly populated by Dire Bears (the PCs will find that out very soon hehehe) and other large and magical beasts. the island. they are with a group of about 60 adventures but they are slowly widdled down to about 15 people. It needs lots of work and any help or suggestions is very very very happly taken. thanks for your input |
| Sheriff Yoda11-20-03, 09:16 PM | Is it totally uninhabited, or can their be natives? If they are natives they probebly worship the Dire Bears as Gods, even to the point that they literatly have their own real pathethon of dire bear deities. |
| avian tiefling11-20-03, 10:07 PM | i would suggest using the idea of having the dire bears being secretely ruled by some sort of demon, but that's been pretty much done to death, so i wouldn't recommend it. how about this: the bears were originally put there as guardians of a long-lost outpost of druids. when the original colonists left, the bears went rampant and became overpopulated (which may have been the reason the people left) It turns out that the island holds numerous places of magic (as in the Starlight and Shadows trilogy). These are the purpose for the original colonization. one of these was once a sacred grove of local druids, but they left when the grove was defiled. the dire bears have since thrived off the unholy magic of the place. this would be site of the climatic battle at the end. you could make one of those few surviving NPCs of the original expedition be a high-power druid, who helps to re-sanctifiy the grove, which becomes his sole purpose for living once he finds out about the unholy place. in the process of purifying the grove, what remains of the original band discovers who had originally defiled the grove-you could use drow, undead such as vampires, liches, dracoliches, and such. they are generally the type to defile sacred places like that. This would be supported by the idea of having natives, who would serve as lesser enemies and guardians of the unholy grove. The island would also contain several other magical places, all of which would help the party. they could give them power (spellcasting upgrades, strength, etc. by magically enhancing their abilities) these places would also provide the raw materials for helpful equiptment. Make one of the NPCs be a dwarven smith and another an enchanter. they would assemble the the ores around the energy sources into stuff like weapons of disruption and other weapons, armor and miscelaneous gear vital to the success of the campaign. more info available upon request aviantiefling@hotmail.com |

| Elven squirrel11-21-03, 12:54 PM | Thanks for the input avian tiefling and sheriff yoda. i am thinking about having the island ruled by a fiendish dire bear that has been advanced heavly to be the lord. i think i will have all the natives not completly leave the island but have them all turned into lytheri-like being that shapshift into squirrels instead of wolves ( this power was bestoded apon them by a holy grotto). i am also going to use your idea of the holy places defiled by a Lich and his minions who were ressurected from the bones of the dire bears pray. thanks again and please help me modify the campain more |
| Morka11-21-03, 01:17 PM | A little variant on this, with a bit of WarCraftIII flavor: the Dire Bears are druids, who have long ago slumber in a forever sleep. They shapeshifted in Dire Bears and their minds are fighting some powerful fiend, so their corpse follow a dire bear instinct. |
| PhilCW11-21-03, 01:41 PM | Perhaps the island had a large population of bears to begin with, but something "happened" to start turning them into dire bears. Maybe a disruption of the weave, or a magical spring or the like. Once the first few bears were affected, they began to mate and it produced dire bear offspring, until the point where the dire bears are the only predators of the island. However, the animals are now "addicted" to the source that changed them, so should that source disappear they could all go extinct, or just revert to normal bears, your preference. |
| Elven squirrel11-21-03, 05:46 PM | those are great ideas, i think i might make all the dire bears "addicted" to a circle of stones wich give them lots of int ( like +8 ) so they plan attacks. these "super bears" are led by a fiendish "super" dire bear, who is protecting an artifact thats powers are legendary (Greater Druids Staff is what i am thinking the artifact should be). the natives are are like the lythari but they turned themselves into Squirrels . the Squirrel lythari have been fighting the Dire Bears for the staff for along time and ask the PC's if they can help. if they do, the Squirrel lythari show them the island and there settelment. ok now i am stuck thanks for your input and the great ideas:) |
| Elven squirrel11-22-03, 12:13 PM | :bump: a bump me? never |
| avian tiefling11-22-03, 01:47 PM | Those dire bears could be druids that have been corrupted by the magic of the unholy grove, and turn into dire bears instead of normal ones. and if those Squirrel -Lythari are in that setting, oh man. ::rubbing hands in anticipation:: :smirk: the possibilities boggle the mind |
| Realmsman11-22-03, 04:52 PM | You could have the whole island be sacred to Malar "The Beastlord", or perhaps just a few of these magical sites. His influence could be why the Dire Bears have been corrupted. Perhaps he wishes to have it colonized by his people "the people of the black blood" who generally all evil lycanthropic rangers/druids. And perhaps the "Mutated" Dire Bears are meant to be part of the People of the Black Bloods hunts. Malar is all about the survival of the fittest. |
| Elven squirrel11-22-03, 09:21 PM | Avian Tiefling-Yes the Lythari-Squirrels are in the campain and the island is there home (they cannot leave because they don't have a boat and they cannot use wood) Realmsman-i think that the Black blood will come while the Pcs are mapping the island, PCs come back to find their camp in ruins and there ship sunk.
