Candlekeep Compendium Vol. VII now available! [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-19-06, 11:00 PM The scribes at Candlekeep have just released their latest volume of Forgotten Realms lore for free download.

Candlekeep Compendium Volume VII (http://www.candlekeep.com/compendium/index.htm) has a lot of great articles in it. This latest offering includes some wonderful NPC's and plot hooks to flesh out your Realms campaign. The city of Illipur on the Dragon Coast is explored, along with the Western Heartlands town of Phorvar's Gap. You will find information on dwarven prestige classes and an article on the god Shaundakul and his relationships with other deities.

Detailed herein for the first time is a new underdark race, the Deep Gnolls. Also the identity of one of Waterdeep's hidden lords is unveiled.

My own humble offering is an article on the Avian Creator Race, the Aearee.

I worked really hard on the Aearee article pulling together what scant little threads I could tweak loose from the grand tapestry of Realmslore about this mysterious creator race. Resources included Serpent Kingdoms, The North, Grand History of the Realms, Realmspace, Kara-Tur Campaign Setting, FRCS, Perilous Gateways, DDGttU, Exile, Fiend Folio (1e) and a host of other obscure references.

There's not really a director's cut, nothing was edited out, however I did uncover a couple of other offshoots/descendants of the Aearee that I did not squeeze into the article. That includes the Vulchlings from the Monster Manual II (1e), a race of vulture people, and the Eblis a race of stork people. I thought it might be cool if a comunity of Eblis was still around in Mulhorand, maybe trading on the reputation of Thoth somehow. But I didn't get a chance to work that in.

I also had to create alot of Aearee names, so I found every example of an Aarakocra name or word and I did a phoneme frequency breakdown and ran it through a language generator that I wrote a while back and generated a huge list of Aearee names and words that I could select from when writing. I thought about doing a Draconomicon style Aearee glossary, but I didn't really get that far, but I still have all the data. ;)

As for the Raptorans, I think it would be a natural fit to work them into the Aearee lore somehow. Good luck with your campaign!

Well, I absolutely loved Gray's article and would like to see further, similar articles. I like the ancient past of Faerun and I personally feel it's underworked. I'd personally like to see more detail on Netheril. Not the High and Mighty archwizards, but the everyday life a Netherese could expect (both from Low Netheril and High, which I suspect to be drastically different). Their goals, their ideals, their views on that which existed around them, etc. I'm also interested in customs, philosophies, and ideals held by certain ancient cultures. Notably Netheril, Narfell, Raumathar, Imaskar, Aryvaandor, etc, etc. If it's ancient, I want to know about it:D
If not the ancient past, then I'd love some detailing of Lantan:D My favorite modern realm of the Realms.
