| Wooly Rupert10-26-03, 02:03 AM | Back in the days of 2nd edition, there was an article in Dragon Magazine about cantrips (issue 221, to be exact). This article suggested making the casting of cantrips be a proficiency... This was the only time I'd ever seen casting cantrips done correctly, thinks I. No version of D&D has handled cantrips as well as that article. Anyway, about the time that came out, I was getting ready to play a half-elven aristocrat (using a kit from yet another issue, though I don't remember which). I was playing him as Lawful Good, which was something I'd not tried before. I showed that article to my DM, and he agreed to let me run with it. So my character wound up tossing off cantrips left and right. Just about anything one could use a cantrip for, he did. He used cantrips instead of shaving, to mend, dry, and clean his clothes, to add spice to food... 'Twas a minor thing, certainly, but it bacame his trademark. Sometimes, a single odd quirk can be greatly expanded upon, and made into a workable character concept. |

He still has his anger and orcish background, but prefers the finer points of luxury. Matt (monk): Come on lets get em they are going after the caravan. Twindle (H-orc): No, its raining. Matt: What are you saying Twindle: I not want to get wet. Matt: for the love of gods, get up off your ass and kill something Twindle: {pulls out pipe and lights it} When is time to eat. |

I will be trying to go through all the levels as a monk but I found that the 'Book of Exalted Deeds' has a feat called 'Vow of Poverty'. There are some mad bonuses but of course you are not allowed to have many possesions. You are only allowed to own clothing, shoes, a hat, quarterstaff, and one days ration of food. Any money you make on quests will have to be given to charity or to fellow characters that are of good alignment. With this character concept you will have to be Lawful Good because the monk is always Lawful and you must be Good to take the Vow of Poverty feat. I will be able to have some more informatio for you if you like in a few weeks once we actually get into the game a bit. I think it will be really fun though to just run around tripping and disarming people. I'll be like the fly that just won't die. Let me know what you guys think. |
| Desies10-30-03, 07:29 PM | strangely enough in a campaign I'm running one of the players is playing a monk with the vow of poverty feat. However, that player is the only one who has seen the Book of Super Happy Goodness, so I don't know the bonuses he will get. |
