I have finished running The Banewarrens adventure a few months ago, and tried running City of the Spider Queen. Well that adventure fell apart, and I have once again decided to try and start the adventure up again, but this time with fresh 10th level characters. There are only three of us, me being the DM for this game, and have told the players to go a head and create two characters each starting at 10th level (or equivalent), standard starting gold as in DMG 3.5, and to use the 32 Point Buy System. The players have no problem with playing two characters each, or the starting gold, but they did say they do not care for the Point Buy System, saying that it makes them have to focus their character too much. I still have no clue as to what they mean by that, but making me think they were complaining that if they had to use the point buy system they could not make their characters as powerful as before. That's what it sounds like to me though, so I could still be misunderstanding them.

I was wondering what others here thought about character generation for published adventures and making a new character starting out at mid to high level. What do most DM's do for this, and is there something I’m over looking about making a characters starting above 1st?

Let the babies have their bottle. If they get too big for their boots. You're DM, you can knock 'em down a peg or two to settle things.

Tell them if they dont stop complaining you'll knock them down to 28 point buy.

The thing with point buy is that the players could or would probably think only of what is good for the class over the good of a charactor. The randomness of the dice roll is, in my opinion, a more organic and less planed way of making a charactor since they will be playing two charactors each the stats between the two could end up being too similar only each would have a different arrangement.
