Characters from the comics [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-05-03, 05:05 PM Okay, so yesterday I ventured into the depths of my closet. After much effort (and combat with the natives), I unearthed the long box of comics that contained the DC/TSR comic books: Spelljammer, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Forgotten Realms, and Dragonlance.

Some of the characters and events of the comics, as mentioned in other threads, have been in canon sources. A notable example is the battle between Clangeddin Silverbeard and Labelas Enoreth on the isle of Rauthym, as detailed in the FR comic.

Characters from the comics who have turned up in canon sources:

Jasmine: a winged human female fighter, first in the FR comic, later in Spelljammer. She returned in the novels Finder's Bane and Tymora's Luck.

The Forgotten Realms comic ended with the crew of the Realms Master journeying to Dwalimar Omen's homeland, Halruaa (Omen was a human male wizard). What's happened to them since then is unknown. The crew included Priam Agrivar, a male human paladin; Ishi Barasume, a lady warrior (Bushi, I think) from Kozakura; Minder, a female dwarf in the body of a iron golem; Vartan Hai Sylvar, a gold elf male cleric of Labelas Enoreth; and Foxilon Cardluck, a male halfing thief from Luiren.

Priam Agrivar: first in AD&D, later in FR. He could be in Waterdeep: Page 16 of Cloak & Dagger: (in reference to a spellbattle in Piergeiron's Palace) "The final gambit set by Kyriani, Agrivar, and Laeral ends the threat with the destruction of one tower of the Palace and both mages, at least one of whom Laeral later identified as Manshoon."
Of course, page 30 of the same source refers to Kyri as: "Kyriani (Agrivar) (N female half-elf M11; half-drow)" So that first passage could have been a typo, and would more properly have read: The final gambit set by Kyriani Agrivar and Laeral ends the threat. Backing this up is that fact that characters are usually referred to by first name, not last.

Vartan Hai Sylvar: FR. Current location and activities unknown, but Demihuman Deities calls him "Chosen of Labelas."

The AD&D comic:

Luna returned to being a goddess, leaving her inn to Kyriani.

The human warrior woman Vajra Valmeyjar, the male centaur warrior Timoth Eyesbright, and the male dwarf fighter-thief Onyx the Invincible are all in Tethyr, according to the Lands of Intrigue boxed set.

A minor character, Tertius Wands (a human male with no discernible class abilities), first appeared in the AD&D comic, and later starred in short stories in the Realms of the Arcane and Realms of Mystery anthologies.

Kyriani:

From Powers and Pantheons, page 157:

Kyriani (N hef M11), daughter of the late Ostus Agrivar and an evil dark elven sorceress of Shadowdale, is the tavernkeeper of Selūne's Smile and the highest-ranking lay clergy member of the House of the Moon. Well versed in wielding her powerful arsenal of spells and her ring of telekinesis, the mischievous and lascivious half-elf has come to grips with her dual nature after twice separating into twin aspects of good and evil.
Kyriani's close friendship with Luna and her aid in defeating the avatar of Shar during the Time of Troubles have served to draw her into the inner council of advisers to Naneatha Suaril. The wanton wizardess has also worked for Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun and the Lords of Waterdeep on several occasions on behalf of the City of Splendors.
Kyriani spends much of her time tending bar at Selūne's Smile, visiting her veritable army of lovers, and observing the endless sea of intrigue that envelops Waterdeep's populace. She can be found at the House of the Moon only very infrequently, preferring to serve her friend and goddess in the streets of the City of Splendors.
Following Luna's departure, Kyriani began secretly studying under the tutelage of Lady Alathene Moonstar and has made rapid progress in her command of the magical arts. She still keeps in contact with her friends Vajra, Timoth, and Onyx, all of whom are currently active in Tethyr's reclamation struggles.

From Cloak & Dagger, page 30: (in the section listing members of the Tel'Teukiira)

Kyriani (Agrivar) (N female half-elf M11; half-drow): The proprietress of Selūne's Smile in Dock Ward has worked with Khelben for years, but she appreciates the group's goals of unifying elves and humans, given her struggles with the two sides of her heritage over the years.

Now, it's quite likely that I've missed something. If someone knows of mention of the characters that I've not listed, kindly share that info!

Also, if anyone has used the characters as NPCs, do you mind sharing any details?

12-05-03, 05:17 PM This may not be the most recent information, but Jeff Grubb wrote a short story that appeared in Dragon #247 (May 1998), "Reunification (Body and Soul)," featuring the crew of the Realms Master (the main characters from the FR comic). In the same issue, for the Rogues Gallery feature, Jeff's wife and frequent coauthor, Kate Novak, wrote up 2E stats for all of the characters. Both articles were illustrated by Rags Morales, who did the artwork in the comics.

12-06-03, 12:17 PM Uh, BigSister, the AD&D comic was set in the Realms -- almost all of the stories were set in Waterdeep. All the characters mentioned thus far have been in one or more of the comics before they were mentioned elsewhere.

But that might just be a rumor.

Yep!!! Got it. They are all a bit older an gruffer in some respects but ya got Hank and the crew seeing Faerun by way of the Elminster Express.

I was just looking for something, and stumbled onto this old thread of mine.

When you say "all the comics", does that include the Advanced Dungeons & Dragon comic? That one happened almost entirely in Waterdeep...

If so, I should like to know which issue included those characters.

Ah, thank you. I have the Archive, but until I asked the question, I never thought about the AD&D characters -- except for Kyri, and I'd already scraped together all the info I could find on her.

I simply did not recall that they had been statted out anywhere other than the comic, so I didn't think to check the Archive.

Vartan is mentioned in Demihuman Deities. He is a proxy (or was) and also a Chosen. :) Talk about a boosted character!
