I'm having problems wrapping my head around the church of Illmater and its nuances... what is this group really like? What are their day to day activities? Is there a real-world religion that is like this church? Any advice or tips would be great appreciated... thanks guys :).

Well the church of illmater is like the real-life church (short of the corruption etc etc)... They mainly help whoever they can, this can take many forms berk. One way is to set up orphanges or "hospitals" of some kind. Wherever there is suffering, the church of Illmater is there to help those in pain. They are a kind lost, willing to take on your burdens, out of all the dieties, Illmater is the most "kind" to the common man. In a way Illmater is similar to Jesus Christ, shouldering everyone elses burden (Only comparing Illmater to the ideal christianity for imagination purposes, not promoting one religion over another) Anyway... thats what I believe the church of Illmater is like... oh yes, they also run some burial places, trying to aid those that are suffering from the lose of one close to them.

Any info on their monks? Would they act like that as well? Would they be more aggressive in any way?

Their monks would act the same way... but if to alleviate a lot of people sufferings, one would have to destroy an evil berk, they would have no problems with it... Hence, they are more proactive in stopping pain to many people :)

Gah!

There goes my MOP open novel antagonist.

Yes, it is my opinion that the more Lawful Neutral aligned sects of Ilmatar's flock would actively oppose most forces that were in league against their church, especially the Loviataran faith.

Good aligned Ilmatari would combat suffering by aiding the oppressed, & Neutralish Ilmatari would aid the oppressed and (possibly) actively eliminate the oppressors.

Is there a good source of info on Illmater? I'd love to get more information on their hierarchy, etc...
I have the Bloodstone Lands, Faiths & Pantheons, and Faiths & Avatars.

Let's see... there is a PC in my FR campaign that plays a Monk of the Yellow Rose, whose patron is Ilmaater.

His PC is a thoughtful type, one who considers how acting without thinking can lead to unfortunate consequences and needless suffering.

As to the Church itself, I've pictured it as a sort of roving priesthood who congregate wherever great disasters and wars have occured. Thus, in my campaign there are a great deal of Ilmaatari clerics and monks in Cormyr tending to the needs of those still suffering from the war.

I've placed temples in major cities such as Suzail and Waterdeep.

Otherwise, I recall that high priests take the title "the Adorned". Ex: Korwalis the Adorned, High Priest of Ilmaater in Suzail (the name of a High Priest in my campaign who the PC's consult from time to time).

More than any other priesthood (aside from Tymora) I've always thought that Ilmaatari priests would be amenable to helping adventurers with Healing and Resurection magic, so I've implemented this IMC.

Anyway, hope this helps!
