Hi there,

I'm just about to begin the City of the Spider Queen with my party and wanted to get an idea from other DM's what the average amount of the module they covered in each session was. We plan to play for around four hours per session. I want to be fully prepared for the game, but feel like if I read too far ahead I will be less intimately familiar with each section...

Will the party be likely to make it to Szith Morcane in the first session or would they even make it into the Dordrian Crypts?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Banta

4 hours is enough time for play with any RPG as long as the group gets right to playing and they don't get off track.

I have a group that I used to play with that, we played for 8 hours but only really made about 5 hours progress, since the GM kept going off track. Made for frustrating gaming at time.

Hi,

I realize that 4 hours in enough time for a session, but what I really want to know is how far to expect my PC's to progress in that amount of time. That way I can look at what other people have done in a similar amount of time and prepare for the session accordingly.

Thanks,

Depends on the group, how many random encounters, etc, without having played with your group, one cannot say. Each group has its own pace.

My group plays approx 4 hours per night. We just finished our 5th session in CotSQ. So far the party has been through the crypts, the bazaar, house morcane (killed Dorina), and the Fane of Lolth. My party moves slower than normal I would have to say.

Our party has moved substantially slower then yours has Schulerta. I'd say about a dozen sessions to get to the Fane of Lolth. Player deaths will slow you down a lot and you can expect plenty of those in this adventure. The door trapped with the slay living spell killed 3 PCs!!!! Don't even ask for the grisly details.....

So, if you think your PCs will have a tough time, then you can expect them to go a lot slower, returning to the surface often to rest. I believe we are on day 31 of the timeline presented in the adventure... My money says that she succeeds in her plan in this campaign.

Disregard. I was logged in as some one else who used my computer prior to now.

I am currently Gming City of the Spider Queen and my sessions last about 4 hours too. They are currently in the process of attacking the castle in Maerimydra. My group took 1 session to get through the Dordrian Crypts, 2 sessions to storm Maerimydra, make an alliance with Solom Nec'razak, and kill Dorina T'sarran.

They took 1 session to travel to Maerimydra. The reason being that I took out many of the random encounters and hazards to make the journey less tedious. The only dangers along the way my PC's faced were the T'sarran niece Revenants, some summoned monsters sicked on them by Irae, and a patrol from Kurgoth Hellspawn's army. This is the only time I took any encounters out of the module. I did this because I feel many of the encounters on the journey there are arbitrary XP giving machines designed to do nothing other than level the PC's up so they don't get their butts handed to them too badly in Maerimydra. This is the only time I ever changed the module as written. Had I ran it as written it probably would have taken them 2 to 3 session to get to Maerimydra.

They took 1 session to kill the Night Walker lurking near the old Lolth Temple in Maerimydra, make a deal with Kurgoth Hellspawn's army, and begen storming Castle Maerimydra.

My group has made good time mainly because they have their combat strategies down to a science and work well as a team. Also when we play side conversations are few and far between.

It really depends on how fast or slow your party is, we play sessions of 14 to 16 hours with about 13 hours of real playing time, and we needet 3 adventure before we even started with te deep wastes.

That would be nearly 10 4 hour sessions.
