Cold Lands (or Bloodstone) sourcebook [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-14-05, 01:16 PM Was wondering about the possibility of a 3.5 ed sourcebook in the areas contained in RA Salvatore's Promise of the WitchKing novel and whether it is a popular enough area for FR fans for a sourcebook to even be considered

Damara, Vaasa, Great Glacier, Narfell, Sossal...

RAS did before write FR9 The Bloodstone Lands, which was the earlier edition's sourcebook in this area and figured he would be the lead author on a project of this kind if it was ever attempted.

He wrote it in 1989 i believe and the area has had vast changes in government and canon events in the area from the Rogue Dragons trilogy and the events in the PotWK novel

I have always loved this area and the "epicness" it seems to have

Any thoughts on whether this would be a good area for a future FR sourcebook, especially with RAS' following gathered from the PotWK novel and its sequel next year?

11-15-05, 01:07 AM I'd love to get a Cold Lands Forgotten Realms accessory, and we'll most likely get one eventually, but it might take a few years, so I'm not holding my breath. All I know is that the nest FR region book we'll get is about the Moonsea, and I have no idea what we'll see next.

When the Cold Lands book finally comes out, though, I'll definitely be buying it. There's so much that's happened in Damara and Vaasa in the last few years, from the fall of Zengyi to the Dragon Rage to that Salvatore book I have yet to read. Plus it'd be nice to finally have more than a few lines of text about the Great Glacier and the very far land of Sossal.

11-15-05, 02:29 AM Yeah, I agree. I would really enjoy a Cold Lands sourcebook. I just recently put my old 2e FR poster map from the boxed set up on my wall after moving and was looking at the Cold Lands. They always have intrigued me when looking at the map cause they seem so far from a lot of the stuff I normally run. I have never really read the old 2e Cold Lands books so I don't know much about them and would really like to see some new info on them.

11-15-05, 10:10 AM i agree that WotC may wait awhile to do one because of the two upcoming books that are due out in 2006 that will 'end' their respective trilogies:

Dragon Rage and Sellswords

once we get those out then the Cold Lands (Bloodstone) area may well be due for a sourcebook and I hope WotC gives FR fans this area in the same detail as the other canon areas

pretty sure that the Cold Lands were not a part of Ed Greenwood's original FR (actually think he had the Great Glacier covering this area) and I don't know what part that may play in a new accessory but it seems to be popular enough to fans to deserve recognition in it's own sourcebook

I am on a team that is designing a Neverwinter Nights 2 module that will take place in this area (in the organization stage currently because the game isn't out til spring 2006) and having to go back to the 80's for 90% of the canon is tough, especially sinve the area hasn't been very stable

Yeah, I heard the same, what was the story of that?

I heard that the Moonshaes were also an addition by TSR, that it was supposed to be part of Dragonlance, but they needed novels to introduce FR to the market, and the Moonshae trilogy happened to be ready at the time.

Though I feel that Cold Lands fit into FR relatively well.

11-15-05, 08:27 PM I'll buy that book, but it be great to get Salavtore to do it again. The whole Drizzt & Breunor Story was gonna start here but for some reason they moved it.

11-16-05, 08:41 AM Well, in a Dragon Magazine interview R.A. Salvatore said that when he first wrote about Bruenor and co. he set the story in the Moonshaes as he thought that was the Realms. And Drizzt was meant to be only a sidekick for Wulfgar.

i for one would LOVE a sourcebook* from this area

What would be the status of ANY regional sourcebook* with the questions around 4e and the jump in timeline?

will regional sourcebooks* be on hiatus for a few years until we can swallow and digest the canon gap of the jump in timeline or will they start cranking them out again after the 4e FRCS?

* - or should i say large adventures that WotC slaps a region name on and then puts a smidgen of information about that region in the back appendix to give the adventure the 'feel' of being a sourcebook so they get the two birds with one stone effect in sales

Yeah, I just downloaded that stuff yesterday, unfortunatly there were some problems with the Bloodstone Lands material and I coudn't even open it.

I think at the time the reference was to the then upcoming Mysteries of the Moonsea.
