| Mandras07-24-07, 06:38 AM | Hello. Which types of shields are favoured by knights in Heartlands (and by knights I mean heavily armored mounted warriors as seen in medieval Europe, not any particular class or prestige class)? I presume they mostly use steel shields - but are light (small) or heavy (large) shields more common? Oh, and one more thing - can a mounted warrior equipped with heavy (large) shield use his shield hand to control his mount? Best Regards, Mandras. |

There were mainly two types the classical shield that looked like a rounded shovel or the bottom of an iron upside down. The slang name for these was heater shields because they looked like an iron. Another popular shield was a longer, tear-shaped shield. It is believed by some that these shields were actually worn on the Knight's back to protect against blows from behind or passing shots from other mounted Knights. The classical shield held in front was usually reserved for jousting in a tournament setting. I am sure others will offer various ideas as many have done throughout history. Hope this helps. |
