| Oathwin Oakheart08-14-07, 10:06 AM | Hello - I have just started a new Forgotten Realms campaign with my group. Five games in. We started at level 3 and now are level 7. I don't know a whole lot about " The realms ". The more I read about it the more I like it! We just finished a long Eberron campaign. The campaign is set in Cormyr. The group is involved in trying to stop an uprising by some of the noble houses ( backed secretly by Zhentarim gold ) against the Queen regent. The question is will there be a forth coming Cormyr source book? I don't see one on the product list for the rest of 2007. I am a little bit surprised that there isn't one. I would think that Cormyr, Sembia and the Western Heartlands would make a good source book that would sell well. On a side note - What other Forgotten Realms books are worth getting? I have the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, Player's Guide to Faerun, City of Splendor : Waterdeep, Champions of Valor ( I love this book! ), Power of Faerun. Thanks. :) |
| msatran08-14-07, 10:21 AM | If ever there were a needed sourcebook, this is the one. I really want them to do a one country at a time thing. I need more details and less dungeons. Anyone can come up with random encounters. |
| Red_Wizard08-14-07, 10:33 AM | Four levels in Five sessions? |
| Oathwin Oakheart08-14-07, 10:47 AM | Four levels in Five games. . . To little to much? We play once a month. The games are all day events. I wanted to level the party up a little because we are involved in some grand events. I fudged the experience points a bit in the first few adventures to achive this. The experience rewards from now on will be by the book. ;) |
| Red_Wizard08-14-07, 11:22 AM | It's hard to say for sure with an all day event, but for me it seems a tad much. However I do know that sometimes quick levels are needed to move into a new area you have in mind. I tend to try and keep the leveling pace relatively slow, mainly from the standpoint that people often need some time to properly adjust to new class abilities. The only thing I would worry about is setting a pace you can't break. Players might become accustomed to gaining a level each session, and then grow impatient when greater periods of time pass with no advancement. But like I said, it's hard to tell with little less than a few words to go on. ;) |
| ShadezofDis08-14-07, 12:43 PM | In the downloads section you can get: Four from Cormyr Volo's Guide to Cormyr And that looks like it for the Cormyr specifics. Some of this information will be out of date as Cormyr was rocked by the Devil Dragon (events which are covered in a trilogy) but for the most part it should give you a better understanding of Cormyr and of what goes on in Cormyr. And it's free. :) |
| dragonheart08-14-07, 01:10 PM | I have no idea how fast you read or what time you have available but the trilogy mentioned (Cormyr: A Novel, Beyond the High Road, Death of the Dragon) As well as Elminster's Daughter which is mostly set in Cormyr and has a plot similar to your campaign would be good background reading for both the DM and the players. |
| MerrikCale08-14-07, 09:14 PM | There was an early Cormyr sourcebook, I believe it was 1e. However, since its a sourcebook, it doesn't really matter what edition. Volo's Guide to Cormyr is worth getting too. Both can be had relatively cheaply used off Amazon and ebay I think As for your other ?, for 3e Faiths & Pantheons is a must for an FR campaign (although not as good as the 2e 3 volumes on deities), Magic of Faerun, Lords of Darkness, and the Silver Marches are very good but I believe are out of print as 3e material. Dragons of Faerun is very good. Lost Empires of Faerun is a terrific sourcebook. I would think the upcoming Grand History of the Realms should be on your list of things to get. Races of faerun is pretty good too and useful in most campaigns. |
| Oathwin Oakheart08-14-07, 10:15 PM | I will be getting the Grand History of the Realms. I think it will help with more detailed information about the Realms. I want to know about the history of Cormyr. How old is it, when was it founded and by who? I also would like some deatails about noble families in Cormyr. Most of the other books I want are out of print or sold out from the place I buy them from. ( Chapters online store ) - Races of Faerun - Magic of Faerun - Unapproachable East - Serpent Kingdoms - Silver Marches - Monsters of Faerun - Faiths and Pantheons Here is a list of books I can still order and don't currently own. Which are best? - Shinning South - Lost Empires of Faerun - Dragons of Faerun - Underdark I guess thats the bad part about getting into the Realms at this point. Most of the older books are hard to get. Thanks |
| MerrikCale08-14-07, 11:21 PM | Here is a list of books I can still order and don't currently own. Which are best? - Shinning South - Lost Empires of Faerun - Dragons of Faerun - Underdark Out of that group, its easily Lost Empires and then Dragons. If you are playing a campaign based in either the Underdark or the Shining South so be it. As for the other books, have you tried buying them used on amazon.com or ebay? |
| msatran08-15-07, 02:20 AM | You'll also want Power of Faerun if you don't have it. This explains a lot about how types of leaders work, and it can give you good ideas for PC motivations, politics, etc, when the game moves into it's higher levels. |
| Finglas Leaflock08-15-07, 09:26 AM | Lots of good suggestions here. For info on the founding of Cormyr and a LOT of its history, the Cormyr novel might be your best bet. IIRC, there's even a family tree for the royal house in there. Another book--in this case another novel--that would be good for getting a feel for Cormyr, is Swords of Eveningstar--I'm a little more than halfway through it right now. Good luck with your game! |
| daimyotx08-15-07, 09:49 AM | I really have to agree with the fact that if you want to know Cormyrrean flavor, you should grab the free downloads of Four from Cormyr and of Volo's. They can be found HERE (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads). While these are old sources, they go into depth on Cormyrrean culture and places and can give you some of the best background basics for running a game there. As for other books to get: I'd recommend Shining South and Lost Empires myself. And I agree sith msatran completely in that Power of Faerun can be an invaluable sourcebook. And for all of the updated happenings, it can't hurt to skim through the Cormyr trilogy that dragonheart and others mentioned. |
| MerrikCale08-15-07, 09:54 AM | I And I agree sith msatran completely in that Power of Faerun can be an invaluable sourcebook. I agree its a great book, but he already has it |
| daimyotx08-15-07, 10:04 AM | ahh - and good suggestion about Amazon.com, Merrik. It's a great place to get FR books if you need an online source. And its really easy to qualify for the free shipping deal when buying D&D sourcebooks. |

| koraldon08-15-07, 02:07 PM | Well, according to FRPgames, they have the following in stock: Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms - Silver Marches HC (d20) Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms - Unproachable East HC (d20) Forgotten Realms: Serpent Kingdoms HC (d20) link - http://www.frpgames.com/cart.php?m=product_list&c=12 (hoping its okay by board rules) Ebay has F&P for 33USD, for a new copy. I must say that I'm very surprised that so many current edition (3=3.5) books for FR are out of print - a lot of them are ever-green... are there any plans to reprint them? |
| Oathwin Oakheart08-15-07, 04:39 PM | I am surprised that the Forgotten Realms source books that are out of print, have not been reprinted. I can't be the only person who would like Races of Faerun or any of the other books that are out of print. For now I will have a look at the books for free. Four from Cormyr and Volo's Guide to Cormyr. I will also try and pick up the Cormyr novel. The family tree in it would be good to have. Thanks! |
| Stigger08-15-07, 07:13 PM | The old 2e Cormyr sourcebook wasn't bad, but there wasn't much in it that wasn't covered in Volo's Guide... although the listing of the noble families was pretty useful. I seem to recall a listing of the Cormyrean nobility floating around out there somewhere... might be on the Candlekeep site somewhere, but I don't even vaguely recall where on it. Its proven pretty handy actually, so if you can track it down, it might be fairly useful. |
| ShadezofDis08-15-07, 08:07 PM | Stigger is right, there's actually quite a few sites out there that explore everything from the nobility to purple dragon tactics and such, google cormyr and you should find some well thought out stuff. |
| daimyotx08-16-07, 12:50 PM | Here are some Cormyr related links that I scrounged up on Candlekeep for you. | Laerekh_Jaelre08-17-07, 01:15 PM | I would like to see a Cormyr source book developed next year in the tradition of the Silver Marches, Unapproachable East, Shinning South series. |
| ShadezofDis08-17-07, 01:17 PM | I would like to see a Cormyr source book developed next year in the tradition of the Silver Marches, Unapproachable East, Shinning South series. With the wealth of information we already have on Cormyr I'd rather see a less detailed area of the Realms get the nod. |
| Artemel08-17-07, 06:25 PM | But, but... there can never be too much Cormyr information. =S ^_^ I just say that because it's my favorite country. |
| Oathwin Oakheart08-17-07, 08:06 PM | I also like Cormyr. It has a traditional fantasy feel to it. I guess I know now that there will be no Cormyr source book coming any time soon. With WotC rolling out 4 ed. D & D in less than a year. Lets hope that the new 4 ed. FR book has more info on Cormyr. |
