Oh boy.... This is way to hard to answer. Which part of the world are you asking history for? There's all kinds of history for all parts of the world. But Lost Empires of Faerun, a 3.5e sourcebook and Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves has some of it. Cormanthyr is a free download and the link to the free downloads can be found in my FAQ of WOTC Links found on the FR FAQ board at the top of the FR board list. |

I did recommand a few books to start with but I'm not sure what nations to start with since each of them has thier own history plus there's a world history. :) |
| BadCatMan11-04-05, 09:44 PM | Asking for the history of the Forgotten Realms is like asking for the history of planet Earth. Toril is a complete world in its own right, with millenia of history. I've only been interested in FR for two years, and I despair of ever knowing all of it. Find your favourite areas, from novels, PC games or rulebooks, and start locally. An older time-line is here: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Castle/2566/realmstime0.htm And a more up-to-date and complete time-line can be found here: http://www.geonomicon.com/portal/ And its separated to regions for easier viewing. |
| Gray Richardson11-05-05, 02:36 AM | Around 35,000 years ago there were the Sarrukh, a race of serpent people that had many great empires and spawned most of the lesser scaly folk (nagas, yuan-ti, Lizardfolk, etc.) After a time, they diminished and the Batrachi (an amphibious race) came to dominate the land. They were replaced by an empire of Avians who died off, and then came dragons who reigned nearly supreme for 6,000 years. About 25,000 years ago, the Elves migrated to Faerūn from another world and raised great civilizations. By use of an epic magic spell called the Sundering they inadvertently shattered the continent of Faerūn. The elves fought great wars with each other (The Crown Wars) and the dark elves were defeated and cursed and retreated into the Underdark to become the Drow. Dwarves and other races prospered in Faerūn. Great empires of Mankind rose and fell. Djinnis and Efreets built Arabian style empires in the South. The Imaskari developed portal magic and brought slaves from another world, who, with the help of their living god-kings, would eventually rebell and formed the nations of Unther, Mulhorand, and later the red wizards of Thay. The greatest empire of all arose in the North, where the Anauroch desert is today. Netheril--Empire of Magic. They cut the tops off mountains and built flying cities. They cast fantastically powerful magic spells the likes of which have never since been seen. One of the Netherese wizards (Karsus) created a spell to steal godhood from Mystril, goddess of Magic, and in casting it he killed her and (briefly) all magic across Faerūn. In that instant, all the Netherese' mighty magical works and flying cities came crashing down, creating a dark age that lasted for hundreds of years. There were great migrations of peoples across Faerūn. Cultures began to blend. Gods died and new ones grew in their place and many disparate pantheons merged into one. Many more great nations rose and fell. That's the history of Faerūn in a nutshell. But it really doesn't do it justice. There is a concise overview of History in the FRCS with a timeline, so start by reading that. And then of course pick up Lost Empires of Faerūn for the best history yet written of the Realms. :) |
| Old Sage11-05-05, 03:48 AM | In addition to the resources already mentioned, I suggest you download A Grand History of the Realms by Brian James. 'Tis a timeline that covers most of the more important points of history on Toril. It's located here:- http://www.candlekeep.com/downloads/grandhistory.zip |
