CR, LA, and ECL questions with Chosen Templates [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-27-05, 09:49 AM Recently in the campaign that I'm DMing the PC's are in a situation where they are being given quests/ tests from their respective gods (except for the minotaur pc who has rejected his god) in order to become Chosen 'soldiers' for an upcoming war between the gods due to reasons I won't elaborate on due to pc's reading the forums.

Anyways, I've been using a particular thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=176507) for reference. My wild elf character has become a chosen of Rillithane Rallifan, and the version I made was referenced to the one on page 2 of the thread. Mine had a CR modifier of +4, slightly less powerful than the one on the thread. One of my players, who happens to be a more experienced dm than I am, rules ways, informed me the a +4 to CR would equal a LA of about +2 in order to calculate experience needed to level.

Is this correct? Where can I find a chart of some sort for this? or is there some sort of system one can use off-hand? What would a +5 be? etc.

Any help would be had. Thanks.

10-27-05, 10:31 AM CR has nothing to do with LA or ECL.

Look at the Illithid (Mind Flayer) which is a CR 8 encounter, yet is an ECL 15 creature. Yes, an Illithid is an appropriate encounter for an 8th level party, yet that very same Illithid is a 15th level PC with only 8 HD.

Taking a look at that Chosen Template, I would say the LA is at least a +8 for that Template if not higher.

So the chosen of Rillithane is LA +8, what about the mystra and the first Eilestraee ones?

One reason it is so high is because of all the Quicken Spell-like Abilities. That right there is something that throws that Template out of whack and makes it very powerful. +8 LA at the very least, and most likely is +10 or more.
