I’m looking for a list of metals and there properties, when used in crafting.
i.e. Armors and Weapon Crafting
So far I have:
- Bronze
- Sliver
- Gold
- Mythril
- Adamantite
- Platinum

But I have no clue of what properties they would bestow to a weapon and what negatives they might carry for game balance issues. The crafting system also includes Gems of the realm that you socket into the weapon, which would also affect the properties. Now I’m sure my idea here is nothing new and someone has built a system of rules and tables for this, but alas I can’t find anything. So any comments hints, suggestions and pointers would be great, thanks.

The 2nd edition book Volo's Guide to All Things Magical had a great section on the various magical properties of substances.

Magic of Faerun also has a decent sized section on what you can do with various materials when building magic items and the like.

Ah thank you exactly what I was looking for, I knew someone must have seen these sort of things before, thanks. Now just to get my hands on a copy of either one of these.

Thanks guys. I've got my ores, metals and alloys all figured out for weapon, armor and jewel crafting now. Thanks

One more question though. Does anyone know or have an idea what the DC to craft a dagger would be?

Lets say my starting metal is iron dagger, which is just that a normal dagger.

Would the craft DC be 10 you think. Then maybe DC 12 for a shortsword?

If they roll a perfect 20 then they get to roll again and if the beat the DC the weapon becomes masterwork is my current plan.

Make a Iron dagger:
DC 10
- perfect 20, gets a reroll for masterwork (craft weapon roll)
- fail first roll, roll a DC 10; fail roll lose 50% of materials

Make a Iron shortsword:
DC 12
- perfect 20, gets a reroll for masterwork (craft weapon roll)
- fail first roll, roll a DC 10; fail roll lose 50% of materials

Also what should the next metal jump be?
Iron to Steel - +2/+5?
Iron Dagger => DC 10
Steel Dagger => DC 12 or DC 15
- steel can take masterwork up to AB +2
- can choose to roll for masterwork status AB +1 at creation at a higher DC (decided DC +4)
- perfect 20, gets a reroll for masterwork AB +2

So a Steel dagger lets say is DC 12; you can choose to roll against DC 16 and try for masterwork(AB +1). Roll a perfect 20 and you get AB +2
AB = Attack Bonus

Next is Elven Steel, this just adds wiegt reduction to the crafted items. But works on the same rules for crafting steel (but at increased DC.)

Anyways as always I appreciate any input someone wants to make.
