The cult of the Dragon is an evil organisation in the realms that believe the world will one day be ruled by undead dragons and they do everything in their power to make that prophecy happen. They create and venerate undead dragons called Dracoliches.

On that topic. I know they believe that one day Dracoliches will rule the world...do they try to become liches too or is that sacred state something they reserve only for dragons? If that is true do they dislike nondragon liches?

The necromancers that form the main leaders of the cult (called wearer of the purple) do not try to become liches themselves. At least not specifically for the purpose of ruling the world like it is said in the prophecy about dracoliches. Some might want to become liches for the sake of it.

As for the living dragons, no, they do not dislike them. Quite the contrary. Members of the cult will go to great lenght to seduce living dragons and convince them to go through the process of becoming a dracolich. A process that is known only to the members of the cult and that was developped by their spiritual leader, Sammaster (who is a lich now by the way).

They are one of those organizations that you always mean to use in or your game, but then never do. I've tried using them like 4 times now and I've never really been able too. Probably because they're really not suitable for lower-level adventurers.
I mean, I'm sure as H*ll not going to send lvl 5 adventurers against a draco-lich, even a baby one lol. I know they could be working through intermedaries but I've just never found a use for them, or a reason why they are using lower-lvl people underneath them.

If you want all the informastion you could ask for, try reading the book called "The Rgae", also with part 2: "The rite", and part 3: "The ruin." i personally haven't read the last one, but I want to so badly. Unfortunately I live in a small hick town, and they don't have a good library.

-That puts it somewhat mildly. But, it works.

-The Year of the Rogue Dragons trilogy actually doesn't have much about the Cult, and how they operate. If you want to read the books, go ahead (they were pretty good, anyway). But, if you're only looking for into on the Cult, then save your $20 +/-.

For how the cult works in 3/3.5 pick up Lords of Darkness, Champions of Ruin, and Dragons of Faerun.

lol It's probably true about the books, although I read the first two along time ago. Anyway, there are many people who know alot about that kind of stuff.
