| faridjo08-05-04, 08:28 PM | Oh No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont know where to put this so every fr setting player can see it. it official now, dnd online will made for eberron. Why??????? , Forgotten Realm is sooo much popular why take eberron????. Is it Fr fan have to wait hundred year more to wait for fr mmorpg. |
| Oakraven08-06-04, 12:13 AM | Reality chech time 1) the company that is trying to produce this game is Tubine, the one who brought us the colosal success known as AC2. . . 2) the Next game they have up their sleeve is Middle Earth online, a Game that seems to be falling increasingly behind schedual. 3) They dont Even have a webpage for D&D online apart from that one "oh by the way we are doing D&D as well" announcment. 4) they are basicaly making it sound like they are working on smaller and smaller games, from what I have seen this is bairly going to be a step up from NWN in scale, And Frankly I almost suspect that D&D-O is little more than their version of Plan B for when the folks who pay the bills pulls the plug on MEO. 5) Ironicaly their is Interest in doing Forgotten Relms online, the problem is that Currently their are only 3 Development companies out their with the resorces to actualy pull it off, one of them has decided that they are not in the least compitent when it comes to online games and is withdrawing from the format. the other two are SOE and Sigle. Good luck getting them to develop it. |
| BrianCritchley08-06-04, 01:53 AM | it's no suprise ebborn is what WOTC went with, Ebberon is WOTC's first in house campaign setting, they WANT it to do well. FR is cool but to WOTC it's the setting they inheriated from TSR. Ebberon is WOTCs baby and they are hoping it takes off |
| TheDarkestOfAngels08-06-04, 03:38 AM | I personally don't mind that Eberron is getting some attention in the gaming community. Honestly. Forgotten Realms shouldn't have all the fun. After all, HOW many games out there (that is D&D-based) is set in Forgotten Realms? Most if not all of them. I wouldn't mind seeing some decent Greyhawk-set D&D games as well. |
| warlockco08-06-04, 04:33 AM | As much as I hate to say it, FR has had the Lion's share of PC/Console game developement. With the Old Classic Gold Box games, with the exception of the 2 or 3 Dragonlance games, they were all FR. Since then, with the exception of Torment, 1 or 2 Darksun games, the 2 or 3 "generic" D&D games, 1 Dragondice, and 1 Birthright, all the Games out there have been FR. So I guess it is time for one of the other settings to finally have a game. |

| faridjo08-06-04, 08:55 AM | I mean this is the first dnd mmorpg, they could atleast made it FR , Dragonlance, or greyhawk setting. Adnd are just simple rule if it not for this three setting to make it rich with flavor. I mean i just can seem to find anymore setting more rich, detailed and close to to living breathing world than the Forgotten Realm. Even Middle Earth could not compare to that, but then again middle earth is the work of one man. Is it bad business judgement or what????. It really don't bother me that much, but with euphora of lookalike mmorpg now, i rather glad that FR is spared from that. According to the devoloper dnd online going to be heavy combat base mmorpg. Ring a bell anyone :smirk:. Guess we going to expect that eberron to be turned into something more like ragnarok online. Where children who don't know to rp roam and power gamers peddling their uber build. Guess they should take rpg from mmorpg and slap mmo-i-don't-know-rp instead. Personally i think this mmorpg madness are just money trap created by developer to get as much money customer. Dont developer know that soon after they get sick of carbon copy class, they would dump they awfull game because they dont feel the connection to the world that they played on. Sigh look like we be seeing elf name such as -=S1r_N00B_Ub3r=- in dnd online after all because what the need of reinforcing rp because majority of the gamer who pay dont care about that. Soon the real rpg player will run off, leaving the powergamer that then started hacking around getting more power than DM, GM or AO whatever you called uber god in ebberron. Then they start private server of dnd online because turbine s**x and started bashing with other throat in private server. After that turbine file for bankcruptcy and dnd online will fade into obscurity. Now i guess i know why wotc dont announce dnd online officially, they know it going to bomb. Smart Choice Wotc!!!! |
| warlockco08-06-04, 09:50 AM | Truthfully, I'm glad that the mmorpg isn't in the FR. Every single mmorpg that I have played, pretty much ends up being nothing but kill, kill, kill, kill, and nothing else. Or there might be a small small small bit of RP, but not enough. Most RP is only between other players, and even that is limited. Nothing as irritating as being hit on by every stupid male out there just because your playing a female dark elf, and you can't get any armor better than leather in EQ, being a low-level and don't have anyone to help move things to the new character. I mean if I'm gonna play a character on a mmorpg and look at it all day, I'm gonna play a female. |
| Derren S.08-06-04, 10:04 AM | Trust me, you don't want that your favorite setting is made into an online game. So many things have to be changed, when plaing it you don't have time to play because you are bashing your head against a wall whenn seeing how all your favorite characters were changed to appeal to the "main customer group" (Young kids, who only want to kill things) Remember how Bioware weakened Klauth to make him killable by a lvl 12 character? Now imagine they do this with all favorite FR characters (maybe even Lolth with the WotSQ going on). |
| Garen Thal08-06-04, 01:45 PM | There are lots of reasons to pick Eberron over the Realms for a MMORPG. Speaking as a FR fan, I'm glad that Faerūn was not chosen as the setting for an online game because: 1) They'd never get the building of it right. The Realms are huge, they are finely detailed, and it's inevitable that something would get severely screwed up. 1a) They'd never get the building of it done. The Realms are huge, they are finely detailed, and it's simple fact that in order to get even a corner of it completely and accurately built up--just the city of Waterdeep, for example, complete with Skullport and the City of the Dead--would take years. 2) They'd never get the running of it right. In order to properly run a MMORPG set in the Realms, you'd need a horde of customer service reps, online DMs, and other folk who really know the Realms well, keeping things fluid and moving. 3) They're looking to draw people in. Frankly, the reason for a MMORPG set in a D&D world is primarily to bring online gamers into your world and get them to buy the setting products, not to get D&D players to play online. They're hoping getting people to play online will get them interested in the world, and so get them to head out and buy a PH and an Eberron book and get cracking on "the home game." If any setting is going to pander to MMORPG gamers, I'd rather it be Eberron. 4) Eberron is new. Let's face it, folks. Some major events are going to happen in D&D Online that trickle into the published works, whether they be really well-run system-wide events, or just the exploits of very, very famous gamers (and you can be sure a "everything I do is property of WotC" agreement will be involved). There is room to do that in the newbord Eberron that there isn't, quite so much, in the Realms, and really, I don't have the patience for that sort of thing being injected into Realmslore as often as I'm afraid will happen in this case. Issues like stupid character names, poor roleplaying, and the like don't bother me, because I won't be playing the game. My concern is that the Realms would be tarnished by the existence of a widespread, persistent world that was not supervised and micromanaged to the greatest detail, and since that's not the case, let Eberron have at it! |
| Thelandrach08-06-04, 04:00 PM | Everybody's got the FR books. That's why they want to set it in Eberron. When was the last time they published a full-length FR Module? How many more are in the works? |

| Plunderer_of_the_planes08-07-04, 06:40 PM | I wanted to see it in Greyhawk. |
| GothicDan08-07-04, 11:19 PM | I personally think that online computer games - and even computer games and video games in general - are horrible examples of 'roleplaying.' The only decent AD&D computer game - or any computer/video game that I've ever played - was Planescape: Torment. It was fantastic. It obviously had combat, but the main part of the game was based around the story. It's just ironic that the best RPG game ever was put out by the best setting... Which later got canned. :) |
| warlockco08-08-04, 05:16 AM | Originally posted by Plunderer_of_the_planes I wanted to see it in Greyhawk. Not likely to happen, Greyhawk is a dead dead horse. The world is even more stagnant than Krynn is. I think the main reason it is kept as the "core" setting is if the copyright were to run out, Gary might try to pick it back up. Since he seems to not be able to do anything "new" effectively. |
| Plunderer_of_the_planes08-08-04, 11:14 AM | Originally posted by warlockco Gary might try to pick it back up. Since he seems to not be able to do anything "new" effectively. Not true, His Lejendary Adventures has done well and there is alot of anticipation on his Castle and Crusade project...Both (suprisingly) are rules light focusing more on story than H&S...He is also working on a C&C project called Castle Zazgyg that is reminicint of GH but not copied from it. And why shouldn't Gary get it back, ED has his imput on FR, Keith Baker gets imput on Eberron and Margret Weis is doing Dragonlances suppliments...Gary should have had imput on GH from the beginning..... But that's all way off topic....Still I don't like the idea of D&D online being set in Eberron but I'll not likely touch it anyway... |
| Faraer08-08-04, 11:57 AM | WotC's whole aim with Eberron is to make it a valuable licensing property that they have complete legal ownership of. The Eberron RPG line is practically a loss-leader for the licensing aspirations. So no surprise they're licensing it. I'm with those who don't want to see a copy of Faerūn with virtual-psychopath MMORPG brats running (and I mean running) around it. |
| Ardent08-08-04, 07:13 PM | I'd love a "core DnD sterile" world myself, with the Greyhawk cosmology and pantheon, the 3.5e core classes and PrCs and a real shirking away from anything campaign setting-related. Anyway, why Eberron instead of a more popular/established world? Quite simply: there's a lot more room to ("re")invent the campaign setting. Eberron's so new there's just a base of information available, so if they stumble about like the proverbial bull in a china shop on the setting, it's less likely to be noticed. Closer to the point, steampunk hasn't been hit up by MMORPGs yet, so it may snag a niche market. You need to think like a suit to figure out Hasbro/WotC marketing decisions. The era of whimsical role-playing publishing is probably pulling to a close and the era of role-playing publishing as a suit & tie industry is pretty much here til high water. |
| Kid SixXx08-09-04, 09:28 AM | Originally posted by faridjo i dont know where to put this so every fr setting player can see it. it official now, dnd online will made for eberron. Why??????? Because Eberron has the pulp elements that would make a MMOG fly and the FR doesn't. As soon as the screenshots of the Lightning Elemental powered locomotive are posted, the game will be golden. Also, there are already enough flame wars about what is or isn't canon on the FR boards. All the FR needs now is yet another source of contradictory info to start yet another FR board land war. Thirdly is the MMOG mentality. On average, most MMOG players have no concept of game lore, and everything and anything is a potential target. I'd imagine that the waiting lists to camp Elminster or Drizzt would be months long, & it would be really embarassing if players sucessfuly killed an iconic. The best way to handle FR icon death would probably be the FFXI method of having certain characters exist only in cutscenes. Also akin to the MMOG mentality bringing down a FR MMOG would be the lackadaisical way in which naming policies are enforced in all MMOGs. Seeing 10 Male Drow Rangers with some form of "Drizzt" or "Jarlaxle" in their name running around would probably crush the belief suspension apparatus we all rely on to enjoy such games. The strength of Eberron as a MMOG is that the PC's are the iconics. They could easily monkey about in this virtual world without any severe reprocussions to the actual pen & paper game lore. One drawback I could see with MMOG implementation of Eberron would be the races. Unless some very convincing balancing is done, MMOGers would gravitate to the "k3wl3st" race available, which means that MMOG Eberron would probably have Warforged PC's on the corner of every block. Something has to be done in-game to make the other races more appealing to MMOGers not concerned with roleplay. Surprisingly, I think that the racial choices in Eberron would make it a much better MMOG setting than the FR, as I could see an FR MMOG becoming just as much a DEFS (Dark Elf Fan Service) game as EverQuest & Lineage 2 already are, and the way EQ2 is doomed to be. The tone of the MMOG FR won't resemble the pen & paper FR in any way, shape or form, which is why I think it was a wise decision not to adapt the setting to a MMOG. |
