i have a PC wanting to be a red dragon disciple from the Tome and Blood. which normally is not a problem but...he wants to play the battle sorcerer variant in the Unearthed Arcana, again which isnt a problem BUT together they are. The battle sorcerer starts with a d8 hit die and the class increases the hit die 3 times which would put it at a d14...what do i do? and how would i simulate this and others like a d16 and d18?

thanx

Roll a die d10 and a d4 and add the results together..... Ditto for d16 and d18 but use a d6 and a d8......

It isn't a problem. Dragon Disciple doesn't change the base class's hit die type, it changes the prestige class's hit die type. Dragon Disciple starts with a d4. The fact that this character's core class hit die is a d8 has no effect on what the prestige class would give him.

So he gets d8's for Battle Sorcerer, d4's for a couple levels of Dragon Disciple and these increase as normal for that class.

Note that the 3.5 DMG has the revised Dragon Disciple that gets straight d12's for all ten levels of the prestige class.

From the Tome and Blood FAQ:
You gain Hit Dice from the dragon disciple class according
to the class chart. For other classes, you gain Hit Dice by
class. For example, if you have 4 levels of dragon disciple,
you’d gain 1d8 if you added a 5th level of dragon disciple. If
you added a level of fighter, instead you’d gain 1d10. When
your dragon disciple Hit Dice increase in size, your previous
Hit Dice from the class do not increase retroactively. For
example if you have 10 levels of dragon disciple, you’ll have
3d6 (for levels 1–3), 2d8 (for levels 4–5), and 5d10 (for
levels 6–10).

EDIT: d12 hit die from the 3.5 DMG is definitely more reasonable for the class.

thanx for the update from 3.5
but incase for some other odd reason i need it uh...

Roll a die d10 and a d4 and add the results together..... Ditto for d16 and d18 but use a d6 and a d8......

that would make the minimum 2?!? can anyone think of a way to get a d14, d16, and d18 without having a minimum of 2?

thanx

Um, then subtract one, that way you'll be able to get a min of 1. :) Shrug.......

d16 = d20 + d12 / 2
d18 = ?

Well, you could be really generous...

d14 = d10 + 4 (or d8 + 6)
d16 = d10 + 6 (or 2d8, or 4d4, or d8 + 2d4, etc)
d18 = d10 + 8 (or d12 + 6)

Also, those 6's could be replaced with d4 + 2... It depends on how generous you want to be.

d14 = d12 + d3 - 1
d16 = 3d6 - 2
d18 = d4 + 2d8 - 2 (or 2d6 + d8 -2)

The only problem is that the more dice you roll, the more likely you are to get average numbers. For the d14 and d16, I'd just roll a die 8 and flip a coin. Heads, you multiply the d8 by two (clearly for the d14 you'd have to reroll 8's). For the d18, I'd roll a d20 and just reroll 19's and 20's.

Why can't you just roll a d7 twice?

For d14, d16 or d18, roll a d20 and reroll too-high numbers. You can't use multiple dice, that would generate a bell curve with the middle numbers coming up more frequently.

Faraer is right, that is the only way to generate a number from 1 to 14 that has a flat distribution of results.

Like I said before, you could always roll a d8 and flip a coin. That gives you both the correct distribution and it means you won't ever have to reroll (a d16 anyhow. You'll still need to reroll the 8 for a d14). I know that may not be everyone's style, but it's still an option.
