d20 Academy [Archive] - Wizards Community

A touch of blatant adevertising perhaps, but I would like to direct people's attention to a website that a friend and I are developing. It's a site that I hope people - especially DMs - will find of use in their Realms-based games;

Early days yet, but hopefully this will snowball with more and more information. Constructive comments and thoughts are appreciated, as are suggestions for content!

I was just wondering what your motives were in creating your own site, as opposed to working with an already established one?

Also, calling it D20 Academy is a bit of a misnomer, because it appears you will concentrate on FR lore, and that name makes it sound more generic.

Okay, minor issues aside, the site looks very proffessional and I eagerly await your contribution to the world of Forgotten Realms. :D

There is room for diversity and candlekeep is not to the likings of everyone. I don't like the look of the site and the elitism of its community. There is a cult following of the greenwoodism over there that is unhealty. I greatly respect the man and appreciate what he has offered us but i don't need to be told by him what is the trend for facial hair in Cormyr and Waterdeep and those are the kind of questions that are being asked to Mr. Greenwwod over the candlekeep forums.

The more sites there are devoted to FR the better...i really don't get that kind of thinking.

Fan created realmslore is great for the community and what i appreciate the most at candlekeep is the compendium that they put forth 2 or 3 times a year.

Instead of putting down efforts of fellow realms fan to publish their own stuff...we should encourage them. So what if it's not over there... Candlekeep doesnt have any monopol over what is writen for FR. Maybe the article posted over d20 academy wont have the exposiure they would have at candlekeep but maybe the ... build it and they will come... theory will apply. I sincerely hope so because what i've seen so far is of great quality.

Too often we seem to consider the realms some kind of soap opera where we wait each day what will happen to our favorite characters instead of a world we could take for our own and make it what we want. I appreciate realmslore that is not derived from canon material because it gives me a fresh vision of the realms, something new. I say keep those organisations coming Sidslick.

I really don't want to offend anyone by my post. I don't post that often because of the language barrier but i read a lot and sometime i need to express some things. The responses in this thread touched a nerve that made me respond but in no way would i want to judge the posters. I simply had to express my opinion.

The reason that we strayed from Candlekeep (and we were sorely tempted to dump everything with them!) is that Candlekeep is limited only to the Realms. We want to keep our options open over whether we remain purely Realms-centric, or possibly expand into other d20 fantasy settings such as Eberron, Kingdoms of Kalamar, the Kyngdoms, so on and so forth.

This also influenced the name of the site. We also recognise that, for whatever reason, many people like the d20 system (for better or worse) and are unlikely/unwilling/unable to change to the proposed 4th edition. Thus there will always be a community to be catered for. I hope that this clarifies any questions posed thus far!

I was NOT attacking anyone for doing this - I've thought about it often myself - I was just wondering where you were coming from. Simply a matter of curiousity, nothing more. I write for SEVERAL fan-sites, so I enjoy the different takes that each gives.

Believe me, I completely understand why someone would want to "do their own thing", so more power to you.

Who knows? If CK moves to 4e, you may get a sudden boost of followers. ;)

09-19-07, 11:41 AM It's ok - the "no attack policy" was felt this side of the Atlantic! :D

This is a creative outlet for a small group of us, that grew out of a game set in Faerun. We got tired of dealing with mega-plots of realms-shaking importance and wanted to concentrate on "local enemies/organisations for local heroes in a local environment". About the same time, the Champions of Valour was released with a number of organisations that had been left (deliberately?) vague, and several members clamoured for the opportunity to join this monk order or that knightly order. Collectively the DMs found themselves needing the extra information - so we sat down and wrote. And wrote. And wrote. Now we have a half-decent stack of bits that have gone through several versions, and feel that it shouldn't be limited to a small group of us alone!

So here we are, and hopefully people will find these bits useful as and when they are added to the site. :)
