Didn't see a thread so I figured I'd start one. If there is one, please direct me there. Thanks!

I'm running a tabletop game and recently the players came across a magic dead zone. Now, the books specifically state that spellcasters cannot cast any spells in these areas. I was always under the impression that wild magic and dead zones were disturbances in the Weave.

Here is the dilemna: The party's wizard was upset because I allowed the party's cleric to cast his spells. My reasoning was that divine spellcasters do not receive their spells or powers from the Weave. Their power is a direct manifestation of their god through it's vessel(ie, the cleric). Arcane spellcasters rely on the Weave to cast their spells, thus are affected by these zones. Unfortunately, the books don't seem to differentiate between the two. The point of contention was noted and I explained my views on the subject and created a house rule. But, I was hoping to find some irrefutable proof in case the wizard decides to grumble again.

Thoughts, ideas, page numbers?

Want to really get your players wondering? Have them run into a Shadow Weaver spellcaster slinging spells at 'em from the middle of a magic dead zone.

Heh.

All casters except Shadow Weave casters use the Weave.

FRCS page 54 under The Weave

"Finally, the Weave is the fabric of esotic rules and formula's that comprises the Art (arcane spellcasting) and the Power (divine spellcasting)."

More can be found in Magic of Faerun also.

So it should have affected the cleric also, since it just says spellcasters in the desc for dead magic and wild magic zones.

Thanks Kuje31. I'll rescind my rule and dig a bit deeper into the books.

And yeah, they'll be meeting up with a Shadow Weave mage when they get to Teflamm later in the campaign. Should be fun. :)

No problem. :) Least your good enough to admit to your group you made a mistake and learn from it. :)
