Death in FR [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-18-05, 10:02 AM This question has been bugging me for a while... When someone dies in the realms, and is devoted to a diety, they go to the diety's plane as petitioners. What I'm wondering is do the petitioners keep their memory of their past lives? I think I've read that they don't in The Manual of the Planes, but I'm wondering what's the situation in the realms.

04-18-05, 10:11 AM I think they keep it for a while, but then they meld with the plane they're on, and thus lose any memory.

04-18-05, 11:18 AM The body dies and then the soul ends up on the Fugue. From there, unless they are Faithless or False, they are taken to thier deities.

There's really nothing in the new planar lore for FR that says they go through the astrals and that thier memories are wiped.

04-18-05, 01:39 PM In second edition, when you died your memories got left in the astral as a "memory core." This may or may not have carried over to 3E. As Kuje said, they haven't really addressed this yet. You could assume that since they haven't changed it, it may still hold true.

When your soul arrived on the fugue plane, you had no memories of your life, but you still had things like habbits, mannerisms and the personality you had in life.

Your god can restore your memories if he feels you need them for some reason. But they don't usually bother.

If you get ressurected, your soul gets dragged back through the Astral and picks up the memory core on the way back to your body.

*Petitioner wanders the fudge plane, servant of his god comes to guide him to his deities plane. But then servant of the trickser god comes and tell the petitioner that he actually worshiped their god. Before the servants of the right god could say something servants of the god of lies and deception arrive and also claim that the petitioner worshiped their god. And while all the servants argue demons come and tell him that he worshiped no god at all.

Then the petitioner runs away screaming and jumps into the wall willingly*

That's a good point, Since there is no write up there is no definate answer, thus it's the DM's decision. However if I was to be in this situation I'd leave an amulet on their neck of their gods symbol maybe... but I might just leave them with knowledge on that. Of all things, Death seems to be suprisingly under polished compared to the rest of FR, I've got no idea why.

Well petitioners still get stripped of their memory when they migrate to the planes, unless a patron deity wishes to return it to them (assuming they go to a specific deity/domain rather than just the plane at large).

3e hasn't mentioned any specific reason/mechanism for the loss of memory (as 2e suggested with the Astral etc), but the process is still there even if details aren't likely to be forthcoming. We're just not going to get material as in depth regarding such things given the current design philosophy.
