| Alisttair11-26-03, 12:30 PM | Are the demiplane of shadow where the Malaugrym reside and the regular shadow plane one and the same in FR or are they separate? Is the demiplane connected to many planes like the other one if they are separate and also, the city of Shade, was that sucked into the demiplane of shadow, home of the Malaugrym or was it in the regular Shadow Plane? Thanks! |

Thanks! In the 2e mutiverse it was a demiplane, part of the Ethereal. 3E has turned it into its own seperate plane though. |
| Srinshee11-26-03, 02:28 PM | Short answer: Yes, they're now the same thing. Rich Baker Birthright-ized the Faerunian cosmology, increasing the importancer and status of the plane, so "demiplane" just diidn't seem like the appropriate term anymore |
| Alisttair11-27-03, 10:56 AM | So it's two separate or one in the same? |
| Iakhovas11-27-03, 11:21 AM | Interesting. Doing some research on The Plane of Shadow, I discovered an entry in the old 1st-Edition Deities & Demigods p. 114.The Plane of Shadow co-exists with the Prime Material Plane, and is a result of the interaction of that plane and the Positive and Negative Material Planes. So, in fact The Plane of Shadow was its own distinct plane in 1st-Edition, then reduced to a demiplane in 2nd-Edition, then changed back in 3rd-Edition. |

Actually the Manual of the Planes which was printed after Deities and Demigods lists it as a demiplane. So it was seperate plane (Deities and Demigods page 114), demiplane (Manual of the Planes Page 21), demiplane (Planescape), seperate plane (3e). |
| Iakhovas11-27-03, 05:44 PM | See. Even the 1st-Edition designers couldn't maintain any consistency between sourcebooks. Yeesh! |

| Green Elven Vampire11-27-03, 06:34 PM | Ahhhhaaa!!!! See this is right where I get annoyed! In 2ED there was the Shadow Mage from Players Options: skills and powers pg. 140. and he/she drew power from the plane/demi-plane of shadow. (i.e. Shadow mages are closely tied to the plane of shadow. They have discovered that every shadow in the real world has a mystic connection or source in shadowland. A wizard with skill and a strong heart can use the most mundane shadows as a doorway to this plane.) Okay and then this... There was a secret school of shadow to go along with all the other schools of magic. (i.e. The School of Shadow: Many wizard spells derive their energy elsewhere, but spells of the school of shadow are exclusively tied to the plane of shadow.) There is somewhat of a school of shadow sub-class with the darkness discriptor spells and the illusions with the shadow sub-discriptor no? But it's just not the same. Sooooooo... Now that there IS an official Plane of Shadows, why then should a shadow mage have to get his/hers spells from the Shadow Weave? I mean... it just seems darn sloppy. Why can't a 2ED Shadow Mage be converted into a 3ED Shadow Adept(wizard/sorcerer) and just use the Plane of Shadows to draw their spells from like it was? Was the link severed between the shadow plane and the prime on faerun? This has always "P"'d me off! Care to help me solve this one? Maybe we just can't. But it's a HUGE blank gap that WoTc seriously need to fix in the next 15 editions they will come out with in the next 5 years! |

As it pertains to this, I think it's cause the tapping into the Plane of Shadows was an "optional" rule (hence the title of the book, Player's Option) and it was a core optional book, while the Shadow Weave is a Realms specific thing. |
| Alratan11-28-03, 06:42 AM | I think Shadowcrafter from Underdark is a better conversion for the 2nd Ed shadow mage than Shadow Adept. |
| Weaver9511-29-03, 07:37 PM | I happen to think the Underdark book was just damn spiffy all around, but who am I to say? |
