I think there would be a bit less outcry if WotC planned and executed an FR sourcebook for 4e that gave rules for playing in different time points, similar to how one can play in different times in either Star Wars (Sith time, Clone Wars, Empire, post-Empire, etc.) or Dragonlance (time of Huma, War of the Lance, War of Souls, etc.).

They won't do that, because they want to 'force' everyone to switch to their official path, in order to maximize their sales potential.

Splitting the fan-base amongst different eras would not be condusive to a profittable Intellectual property - focus is key, even if you loose some fans along the way.

Unfortunely... :(

-What you say, mustafa, is definitley true.

-Richard Baker has stated in his 'Ask-the-Author' thread that there are no plans to support the current era once 4e is released.

And here I naively thought that "offering the players choices" was one of the tenets of running a successful game.

The whole multiple time points thing was something I thought was a really nice touch from the aforementioned DL and SW products.

-It would be cool. Something of the sorts was offered in 2e, with the couple of 'Arcane Age' products that were created. But, as of right now, anyway, it does not seem that the current era will recieve the same kind of treatment. A pity, because there are so many stories to be told, so many plots to be concluded, so much we still don't know...

There's 3 editions' worth of material for running pre-4E Realms out already, and it's not going anywhere. Despite what they say about Spellplague and magic, there's absolutely no reason you couldn't simply pretend wizards have always cast spells as they do in 4E, if you want to use the new ruleset in old context. In other words, all you're missing is the fluff to fill in the 100-year gap, and even that is going to be either explicitly stated in the new campaign book or something you can extrapolate from the end results.

Essentially, how is that any less than what you get in Star Wars?
