Discovering FR [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-04-06, 10:35 PM I have been playing DnD and things like for about 10 years casually, but never really got into the Forgotten Realms lore. What sources do people suggest for me to discovery and begin to understand this realm of DnD. At the moment I don’t even know where to start.

I am specially interested in things like the world itself, locations, way of life, themes etc…

09-04-06, 11:44 PM -Well, the best place to start would be the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which is easy to find and readily availible. Then, you might want to pick up a whole bunch of second addition sourcebooks, since they have more lore than numbers (whereas 3e has more numbers than lore).

-Candlekeep.com is another place to visit. I recommend it...No, I demand it. As the All-Powerful Karsus, I command you to visit Candlekeep.

-Basically, be like a sponge, and absorb as much as possible.

09-05-06, 10:09 PM I agree with everyone above, Candlekeep and the main campaign book. As for surcebooks, I would look to Faiths and Pantheons and Magic of Faeurn first. After this, I would go with Races of Faerun. Lords of Darkness and Dragons of Faerun are good but not necessary.

If there is a particular area you've decided to set your campaign in, get a corresponding sourcebook if there is one. Plus, it can't hurt to read some of the novels especially RA Salvatores, Songs and Swords, War of the Spider Queen, the Threat from the Sea, and the recently completed Last Mythal and Dragon series, plus the old Harper series.

That about covers your second mortgage. But hey, its worth it.

I'm fond of the Cormyr trilogy, Return of the Archwizard trilogy (IIRC), The Rage trilogy, The Last Mythal trilogy, and the Sembia series.

That should keep you busy for a while!;)

09-25-06, 09:30 PM I know that some people dont like the book, but Races of Faerun is one of my absolute favorite Realms book ever. The cultural info on the different races and human ethnicities is priceless.

Plus, it has the true Bladesinger Prestige Class :)
